Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • OF/RHPPosition Projection

12/08/2013 - College PREP - Midland, TX Martinez continues to show as an OF/RHP but currently projects best in the OF for the next level where he has improved his baseball abilities. Defensive grade has improved, now showing well above average as he shows clean / smooth actions. Feet are active / aggressive as he attacks balls and works to get behind balls, playing through well with momentum to his target. He reads balls well off the bat and flashes range with defensive grade continuing to improve as he increases foot quickness. Throws are accurate, flashing carry but will benefit by building more arm strength through a long toss program and improve footwork to throw. At the plate, hitting grade has improved as well through a squared / athletic setup. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed through a level swing path. He makes consistent contact as he displays a solid line drive approach. Power numbers will continue to improve as he learns to load more and use his lower half through the swing. On the mound, he threw his top velocity to date at 79 mph. Fastball shows a range of 78-79mph. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual break and flashes potential of being a quality pitch. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a feel for with arm side run. Stock to the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength and he works to throw more strikes.

12/27/2012 - Under Armour Recruiting Classic Miguel continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities at both his positions. In the OF, foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date. Feet are active / athletic as he takes proper routes / angles in tracking down balls as he works to get behind balls and plays through well with momentum to his target. He has improved his defensive grade in the OF. Throws are accurate with carry but needs to build more arm strength through a long toss program At the plate, Martinez shows a balanced approach with rhythm. Hands are loose / quick and work through a level swing path as he displays a line drive approach. He works to keep hands inside the ball, utilizing all fields. Power numbers will continue to improve as he learns to use his lower half more. On the mound, arm strength has improved as he topped out at 78 mph. Fastball shows a range 74-78 mph on a downhill plane with run / sink. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape with late depth. Command / control are a plus as he throws strikes with all his pitches, attacking hitters. Stock on the mound will rise as he continues to build more arm strength. Mental makeup is a plus as he is very coachable and works hard to be the best player he can be.

10/21/2012 - College PREP - El Paso, TX Miguel is an athletic, 2-way player who plays OF and RHP. In the OF, Miguel has sure hands, active feet, and he takes good angles to the ball. He plays through and throws with accuracy, but will need to attack more aggressively and avoid flying open to improve. On the mound, Miguel has a short / loose arm, fluid actions, and he uses his lower 1/2. More explosion and added velocity will help mound effectiveness improve. At the plate, Miguel has a square set-up, a short stride, and strong hands. He makes hard contact, and has pop in his bat. Looser action, swinging in better rhythm, and more lower 1/2 can help improve hitting.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
