Official Scouting Report

  • 3B/RHPPosition Projection

08/06/2017 - National Tryout Plus - Council Bluffs (Omaha), IA Mike continues to show a promising future on the diamond. At the plate, power potential is now well above average through a tall, squared setup. Hands are quick (84 mph exit velocity) and work through an aggressive swing path. He has strength in his swing and shows a feel for the barrel with gap-to-gap pop. At 3B, he displays proper footwork and moves well laterally. Hands are clean and presents well out front. Feet are aggressive as he attacks balls but will benefit by playing through with his body. Range is a plus as he moves well laterally and covers a lot of ground. He shows off his athletic abilities on his feeds of the double play, getting rid of the baseball quickly. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 69-71 mph. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup but throws too hard with velocity too close to fastball. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program.

08/07/2016 - National Tryout Plus - Council Bluffs (Omaha), IA Mike continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date, now a solid runner at 7.31. At 3B, he displays smooth actions. Feet are aggressive as he attacks balls and squares up well with his body. Hands are clean but will benefit by presenting more out front. He shows off his athletic ability on his feeds of the double play. Hands / feet work well together as he gets rid of the baseball quickly with accuracy on his throws. At the plate, power potential has improved through an athletic setup. Hands are quick and work through a level swing path. He shows a feel for the barrel with power showing best to the pull side. Power will continue to improve as he works to utilize his lower half more aggressively. On the mound, arm strength has improved as he threw his top velocity to date at 72 mph. Fastball shows a range of 70-78 mph with cutting action as he hides the ball well. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup with sinking action. Getting on a long toss program will help to increase arm strength which will aid in his development on the mound.

12/27/2015 - Under Armour Baseball Factory Recruiting Classic Mike McVey showed as a phenomenal team player that had consistent ability offensively and defensively at the Under Armour Baseball Factory Recruiting Classic. At the hot corner, he was aggressive to come get the ball, taking decent angels, and made the routine plays. He showed good glove presentation and was sure to secure the baseball. Continued work on a throwing program to clean his arm swing and add strength is key to further growth. Offensively, he hit with a quiet head and used the middle of the field with his approach. He was aggressive to take hacks and worked to implement more hip/lower half use with his hands. All in all - Mike is only a sophomore that has time on his side as he improves & fine-tunes his game.

01/19/2015 - College PREP - Omaha, NE Mike continues to work hard on his game. With the bat, this RHH remains balanced with patience, letting the ball travel into the zone. Swing is short/compact/direct as he has pop off of his barrel to the pull-side. At 3B, he picks out the hops well and fields the ball out in front. He shows some range to his right and left and has a clean exchange to throw. Utilizing his lower 1/2 to gain ground during his throw will aid in increasing velocity. On the bump, FB shows slight sink as he works it to both sides of the dish. He drives off the rubber, maintains level shoulders and works in-line toward the dish. Breaking ball has 11/5 shape with sharp action, complimenting FB well. This 2018 grad has skills with still a lot of time to develop.

09/20/2014 - Infield Accelerated Training Weekend (Ages 12-14) Mike is a young, infielder who shows sure hands and good body control. He shows great understanding of the position and made adjustments very well. Mike shows a great fielding position, fielding the baseball out front giving him soft/sure hands. He needs to continue to work on his tempo and rhythm in the infield as he currently tends to be too choppy with his footwork. Mike also needs to develop his foot speed in the infield, making them quicker and more efficient which will increase his range.

08/02/2014 - National Tryout - Council Bluffs (Omaha), IA Mike has worked hard and improved in almost every area of his game. With the bat, this RHH shows an open setup with good rhythm. He lets the ball travel into the zone and swings on a level path. He hits the ball where it's pitched and uses the whole field. At the hot corner, Mike takes good angles laterally and fields the ball with sure hands. He has a clean exchange to throw and fires accurate throws across the diamond. On the bump, this RHP works to stay on top of his pitches and drive downhill off of the rubber. FB now tops out at 68 mph while showing run. Breaking ball has 12/6 shape and compliments his FB well. McVey has developed nicely and still has a ton of time to grow in his game.

12/27/2013 - Baseball Factory Winter Classic Mike is a two-way player who is a third-baseman and RHP. Defensively, he has a good quick release, knocks balls down and continues to be able to make plays. Mike can take the next step in his development as he improves his footwork, athleticism, and fielding mechanics. On the mound, Mike commands his FB very well, works downhill and has good arm action. He holds runners well, has good extension, and has good pitching mechanics. As he continues to develop his off-speed and his balance point, he can excel as an RHP. Offensively, Mike has good hand-eye coordination allowing him to make consistent contact with a little pop also due to his ability to load his hands fluently. As his balance improves, he will be able to use his strength to his advantage more often.

08/03/2013 - Interactive Video Program - Council Bluffs (Omaha), IA Mike is a tall, thick, 2-way player who pitches and plays 3B. Defensively, Mike has active feet, firm hands, and he covers ground well. He keeps the ball in front, makes plays, and he throws with carry and consistency from a long / loose arm action. On the mound, Mike shows a loose arm, good balance, and he ability to finish in a complete position out over his front side. At the plate, Mike has a still head, a proper load, and some pop in his bat. He makes contact consistently, and he gets good extension through the ball. Abilities can improve with work on the following.

Defense
1. Avoid stabbing
2. Fielding position
3. Long toss
Pitching
1. Avoid wrapping back AA
2. Off-speed
Offense
1. Avoid lunging
2. Shorten swing
3. More lower 1/2

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
