08/07/2016 - National Tryout Plus - Dublin (Columbus), OH Mike is a solid/strong athlete who continues to progress. With the bat, this RHH has a balanced setup with a solid base. He swings against a firm front side and engages his lower 1/2 with bat speed and connects with strength. He hits the ball on a line and drives it to both parts of the field. Behind the plate, he sits in with flexion and quiet actions as he tracks pitches into a soft mitt. Throws down to 2B as he gains ground toward 2B. He moves well laterally and centers pitches in the dirt off of his chest. Mike is a projectable catcher who will make things happen when he steps onto the diamond.

07/11/2016 - College PREP - Avon (Cleveland), OH Mike continues to show a promising future on the diamond. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date. Behind the plate, pop times showed in the low 2.20 range with accuracy on his throws. Feet are active as he gains ground and works in line to his target as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. Receiving / blocking skills show as quality tools that will play well at the next level. At the plate, he shows an aggressive approach and a feel for the barrel. Hands are quick (84 mph bat speed) and work to and through a level swing path, creating extension. Barrel accuracy is a plus with the baseball exploding off the bat when centered, mainly to the pull side.

07/06/2015 - National Tryout Plus - Cleveland, OH Mike continues to show improvements in his game with a promising future on the diamond. At the plate is where he has improved the most, now displaying well above average hitting abilities with outstanding power potential. Hands are quick, generating bat speed to and through a level swing path. He is strong and has strength in his swing with the baseball exploding off his bat when centered, mainly to the pull side. Lower half works well through the swing with hitting grades continuing to improve as he works to keep hands inside the ball to utilize all fields. Behind the plate, pop times showed a range of 2.19-2.28 with accuracy and carry on his throws as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. Times will continue to drop as he continues to build more arm strength through a long toss program. Receiving / blocking skills are now outstanding showing as quality tools that will play well at the next level.

07/07/2014 - College PREP - Cleveland, OH Mike continues to progress on the diamond. Behind the dish, he shows quick actions and moves athletically behind pitches in the dirt. On throws down to 2B he gains ground and has a quick exchange (pop times at 2.18). With the bat, this RHH shows patience as he tracks the ball into the zone. He has quiet actions and swings on a level path. More extension through contact will help power to rise. Mike is a hard worker who will get to where he wants to be.

02/22/2014 - Hitting Accelerated Training Weekend (Ages 12-14) Mike is a strong kid that shows great potential with the bat. He does a great job of keeping the swing quiet, which allows his barrel to work well, and also allowing him to hit well to all fields. For his size and strength Mike shows the ability to use his hands very well, keeping them inside the baseball and extending through contact very well. Mike needs to focus on keeping his upper body consistent during the swing, he tends to let his upper body drift during the swing, which causes his front side angles to get soft, and also takes away from his leverage. He needs to focus on keeping his shoulders between his knees, and not letting his chest drift over the front knee.

12/27/2013 - Baseball Factory Winter Classic Mike is a young player with very good size and athleticism. Defensively, when Mike worked out at his primary position (catching), he showed better than average abilities. When blocking, he shows good lateral movement and angles his shoulders forward to effectively smother the baseball. When receiving, he shows a good target and sure, soft hands. He can focus on widening out his base and working from a lower stance. When catching and throwing, his exchange is clean and shows better-than-average arm strength. He needs to focus on gaining more ground toward 2B and throwing with a shorter arm action. At the plate, Mike is athletic and has a loose swing and swings aggressively. He has good plate discipline but does need to improve his patience and strengthening his lower half to stay balanced. Mike is a very nice player and a good teammate.

10/06/2013 - Interactive Video Program - Trenton, NJ Mike is an athletic catcher with solid skills. Behind the plate, Mike has a good base, sure hands, and quick lateral movements. He holds a good target, blocks well, and he throws with accuracy to 2nd base. Offensively, Mike has an athletic set-up, a square stride, and his swing is level. He has good bat speed, pop to the pull side, and he uses his lower body well. Abilities can improve with work on the following.

Catching
1. Long toss
2. Play lower
3. Gain ground
Offense
1. Let ball travel
2. Stay short

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
