Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • SS/RHPPosition Projection

05/29/2011 - College PREP - Bowie, MD Mitchell showed solid defensive abilities at his last workout in Bowie, MD. He fields from the right, his hands are soft and sure, and his feet are active. Mitchell fields in a square / athletic position, his exchange is quick and clean, and he squares his body to his target well. He has a free and easy arm action with carry and good accuracy to his target. An earlier glove and finishing off his throws will only help SS grades rise. At the plate, Mitchell showed a square / athletic set-up, a proper load, and a short / square stride. He keeps his head still, his swing is level, and he makes solid contact. Sharpening his barrel accuracy along with driving the away pitch will help hitting rise.

01/14/2011 - Under Armour Pre-Season All-America - 2011 Cooksey showed similar abilities at the Pre-Season All-America as he did in previous workouts. In the INF, Mitchell showed fluid actions and playable hands and feet. He takes good angles to the ball. He has a good set-up, keeps the ball in front of his body, and throws with accuracy and carry to his target. On the mound, Mitchell worked in good tempo. He keeps his eyes to his target and repeats his delivery well. Mitchell has a short / loose arm action, throws strikes and lands in a square fielding position. Offensively, Mitchell showed a solid set-up, balanced approach, and a level swing. He tracks the ball well, puts the ball in play, and he has pop in his bat to the pull side. Mitchell is a solid two-way player that with minor improvements can be a player to watch.

07/25/2010 - Exclusive Filming Shoot - MD 3 Mitchell excelled at this event as he improved his arm strength and fielding grade. At SS, all the plays made were clean and smooth. Came from the right and aggressively played thru ball. Fielded it out front with soft hands allowed for him to get rid of it quickly especially with the BH. Demonstrated good range both ways with quick foot work. DP feeds and turns were smooth and quick. At the plate, good setup allowed him to have direct hands to hitting zone with level swing. Showed an aggressive, line drive approach as he hit balls to all fields. Power will continue to improve as he gets stronger. On the mound, kept eyes on target with the ability to get to his balance point and repeat his delivery. Good glove side lead and direction allowed him to be around the plate with all of his pitches. Stringent long toss program will continue to help improve his velocity. Had the ability to keep his arm speed the same for all of his pitches which created good deception. CH showed as his best pitch.

06/18/2010 - USA Baseball 16U Championships (FL) - 2010 Cooksey continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date, now a 7.32 runner. Hands and feet work well together through the fielding process but needs to be more aggressive in coming to get, playing through the baseball. He can make throws from all angles with carry across the diamond. Actions are loose and athletic. Offensively, Mitchell shows a solid setup with a plus eye at the plate and idea of the zone. He had a big hit to tie the score in the later innings. Power numbers will increase as he learns to utilize his lower half more efficiently and add muscle strength. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 74-77 mph with slight arm side run. His best tool may be his makeup and work ethic as he works hard and is willing to make adjustments to be the best he can be.

06/19/2009 - USA Baseball 16U Championships (FL) - 2009 Mitchell is a young, 2012 graduate that shows as a two-way player at SS and on the mound with an average looking frame that shows projection as he continues to physically mature and fill out. Currently, he projects best at SS. Foot speed is average and he needs to get on a speed agility program to improve foot quickness for the next level. Feet are active and aggressive in playing through the baseball with his feet and hands. Lateral movement is a plus, displaying range. Glove action is soft, clean, and sure in making the plays. Defensive abilities are solid average in the middle of the IF. Arm strength is solid average and shows the ability to make throws on the run with accuracy. He must get on a strict long toss program to aid in further developing more arm strength, raising velocities. At the plate, hitting abilities and power are solid average. He shows a balanced approach, loads well, and keeps hands inside the baseball, utilizing all fields. Swing path can get long due to bat wrap, created in load. Power numbers will increase as he learns to utilize the lower half more efficiently through the swing. On the mound, Cooskey shows a solid delivery with plus tempo that allows his arm path to create a consistent release point. Fastball is straight and needs to work on locating down in the zone. Breaking ball displays a 12/6 shape with loose spin and gradual break. He fields his position well and showed the ability to hold runners well at 1B but needs to work on holding runners at 2B by varying times. He best tool maybe be his attitude and desire to learn as he is a great listener and willing to make adjustments as he made great improvements. Mitchell is far from his potential and with his work ethic and attitude will create success. With 3 years to further develop, he will be fun to watch.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
