Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • 3B/RHPPosition Projection

02/24/2013 - College PREP - Dayton, OH Griffiths continues to show as a 3B/RHP but currently projects slightly better at 3B for the next level where he has improved his baseball abilities. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date, now a 7.43 runner. Feet are quick / aggressive as he works to play through ground balls while displaying soft / sure hands well out front. Throws are accurate with on line carry as he works to get rid of the baseball quickly. At the plate is where he has improved the most, now displaying outstanding hitting abilities and power. Hands are quick, generating plus bat speed through a short / level swing path. He works to stay inside the ball utilizing all fields. Barrel accuracy is a plus with the baseball exploding off his bat to all fields. He uses his lower half well and has strength in his swing as he delivers the barrel to the ball. On the mound, Fastball showed a range of 80-84 mph. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a feel for with fading action. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with tight spin and short break as he needs to work to stay on top of pitch more. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength and throws more strikes.

12/27/2012 - Pirate City Christmas Camp and Tournament Griffiths continues to show as a 3B/RHP with solid abilities at both positions. Feet are active as he works around balls and squares up well displaying clean hands. He attacks balls and plays through, presenting hands more out front. He needs to improve foot quickness to continue to improve defensive grade. Throws are accurate with carry across the diamond as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. At the plate, Mitchell shows an athletic stance and good strike zone discipline. Hands are loose and work through a level swing path. He makes consistent contact, mainly to the pull side as he needs to work to keep hands inside the ball to utilize all fields and continue to improve hitting grade. He shows a feel for the barrel with baseball jumping off the bat when centered. Power numbers will continue to improve as he learns to use his lower half more. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 79-83 mph with solid sinking action. Breaking ball shows potential as being a quality pitch, displaying 10/4 shape with late breaking action. He shows good fade on his changeup but slows arm speed, tipping off pitch to hitters. Command / control are a plus as he throws strikes with all his pitches. Mental makeup is a plus as he is coachable and works hard to be the best player he can be.

10/17/2012 - Arizona Junior Fall Classic Mitchell is a big, strong 3B/RHP that will graduate in 2014. Feet are active as he works to square balls up and displays clean hands. He needs to play through balls more and present hands more out front to improve defensive grade. Throws are accurate, with life and on line carry across the diamond as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. At the plate, Griffiths shows a balanced approach with rhythm. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed through a level swing path. He has strength in his swing with the baseball jumping off his bat when centered. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 79-82 mph with late arm side run. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape with gradual break. He shows a feel for his changeup as he maintains arm speed but needs to work to stay on top of pitch more. Mental makeup is a plus as he is a hard worker, very coachable, and will to make adjustments to be the best player he can be.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
