Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • OF/RHPPosition Projection

12/20/2014 - Baseball Factory Christmas Camp & Tournament at Pirate City - Session 1 Mitchell is a coachable player who has a willingness to learn. On the bump, this tall/projectable righty displays a strong mound presence. He builds momentum through his delivery and drives in-line toward the dish. He varies his looks keeping base runners guessing. Working to get on top, using his frame and extending through his finish will help to improve effectiveness. In the outfield Mitchell has a good pre-pitch with the ability to get good reads and jumps. He has a good first step, works around and through ball with accurate throws. At the plate, he gets to a good hitting position with quick hands and a level path. He swings on a level path and drives the middle of the field. A 2016 grad - Mitchell still has time to work on and develop his skills leading into his junior season.

07/09/2014 - National Tryout - Minneapolis, MN Mitchell continues to show as an RHP/OF still projecting best in the OF for the next level where he has improved his abilities. Foot speed has improved the most as he ran his best 60 time to date, now a solid 7.39 runner. Defensive grades have improved, now showing slightly above average. He reads balls well off the bat and takes proper routes / angles in tracking down balls. For defensive grades to continue to improve, he needs to work to get behind balls more to play through with momentum to his target. Arm strength has improved as he gets rid of the baseball quickly with accuracy on his throws. He will benefit by building more arm strength through a long toss program. At the plate, he shows a balanced setup. Hands are loose and work inside the ball as he utilizes all fields through a line drive approach. Power numbers will continue to improve as he learns to load more and transfer weight properly through his lower half. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 69-72 mph. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape with gradual break. Control is a plus as he throws strikes with all his pitches. Stock on the mound will continue to improve as he builds more arm strength and works to through more strikes.

07/10/2012 - College PREP - Minneapolis, MN Mitchell is a young, tall RHP/OF that will graduate in 2016. Currently, he projects best in the OF for the next level. Feet are active as he takes proper routes / angles and uses two hands well. He needs to work on getting behind fly balls more and improve foot speed to improve defensive grade. Throws are accurate but must build more arm strength and carry through a long toss program. At the plate, Hurtgen shows a balanced approach and makes consistent contact, mainly to the pull side. For hitting grades to improve, he needs to work to keep hands inside the ball, utilizing all fields. Power numbers will continue to improve as he learns to use his lower half more. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 65-68 mph. Breaking ball displays across break and sweeping action. He slows his arm speed on the changeup, tipping off pitch to hitters but has good arm side run. With 4 years to further develop, Mitchell has abilities with time and room to continue to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
