08/17/2008 - Under Armour All-America Game 2008 Mychal Givens has been on the radar of scouts for several years. Although known as a SS prospect early on, he is now a legitimate 2-way player who could be drafted as either a shortstop or a right-handed pitcher. In recent months, it seems that more teams like his future on the mound due to his electric arm. He throws a tailing FB from a low ' arm slot that jumps out of his hand and has touched as high as 97mph. He comfortably sits in the 92-95 range with a solid change as his second pitch and a sweeping breaking ball that he shows at times. If teams have interest in him on the mound, it is likely in the role of a closer or late inning reliever. As a position player, he shows off his plus arm at SS to go with sure hands. His athleticism is on display everywhere, though he is sometimes more style than substance. He has strength on his frame and a level swing that allows him to spray line drives to all fields. Some adjustments at the plate are necessary to see him as a productive offensive player at the highest level in the future. Overall, Givens is a premium athlete that will garner interest at both positions this spring and should receive first round consideration. Drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 2nd round of the 2009 MLB Draft. Currently a reliever with the Orioles.
