Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • RHP/3BPosition Projection

10/09/2013 - Arizona Senior Fall Classic Nathan continues to show as a RHP/3B, projecting best on the mound for the next level where he has a big upside. Delivery is outstanding, allowing his arm action to work quick and free to the plate. Fastball showed a range of 84-86 mph with arm side run. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with tight spin and gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a feel for with sinking action. Off speed pitches are outstanding and will get outs at the next level. Command / control are outstanding as well as he throws strikes with all his pitches to both sides of the plate and changes speeds well. He had 4 quality innings at the event. At 3B, feet are active as he works to square balls up, moves well to glove side, and displays soft / clean hands. Defensive grade will continue to improve as he attacks ground balls, plays through and presents hands more out front. At the plate, he shows a squared / athletic setup with balance. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed through a level swing path. He has strength in his swing with baseball jumping off the bat when centered, displaying gap to gap power.

07/08/2013 - College PREP - Cleveland, OH Nathan has molded into a premier prospect on the bump. With an explosive FB from 88-92 mph and showing late/heavy action he fills up the zone throwing strikes. He uses his lower 1/2 well to drive off of the rubber. CB shows 10/4 shape and has powerful/late break. CH is best off-speed and compliments his FB well. At 3B, Nathan has active footwork and gets himself into an athletic fielding position. He shows a quick release and gets the ball across the diamond. Offensively, this right-handed hitter utilizes his lower 1/2 well and drives the ball to all fields. With his future being on the mound, Blake should turn some heads as he enters his senior year.

02/24/2013 - National Tryout - Dayton, OH Blake continues to show as a RHP/3B but currently projects slightly better on the mound for the next level. Arm strength is well above average as indicated by his top velocity of 86 mph. Fastball showed a range of 84-86 mph with late life and arm side run. Change-up is best off speed pitch, showing a solid feel for with arm side run / sink. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with tight spin and short break. He attacks hitters as he throws strikes with all his pitches, locating to both sides of the plate. At 3B, feet are active as he works to square balls up and plays through with his body. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed through a level swing path. He shows a feel for the barrel with the ball jumping off his bat when centered, mainly to the pull side. For hitting grades to continue to improve he needs to work to keep hands inside the ball to utilize all fields.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
