Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • RHP/2BPosition Projection

09/10/2017 - College PREP - Knoxville, TN Nathan is a lean, athletic RHP/2B who has a bright future on the diamond. On the mound, delivery is sound / repeatable allowing his arm action to work free to the plate. Arm strength is outstanding as indicated by his top velocity of 84 mph. Fastball showed a range of 79-84 mph. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with late / sharp break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a feel for pitch with arm side run. Off speed stuff show as quality pitches that will get outs. Control is solid as he throws strikes with all his pitches. Stock on the mound will continue to improve as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. Foot speed is well above average as indicated by his 60 time of 7.05. At 2B, defensive abilities are well above average as he displays smooth / athletic actions. Feet are aggressive as he attacks balls and plays through well with his body. Hands are soft / sure and he presents well out front. Range is a plus as he moves well laterally and covers a lot of ground. Hands / feet work well together as he gets rid of the baseball quickly with throws showing accuracy / carry. At the plate, he shows an open / athletic setup. Hands are quick (91 mph exit velocity) and work through a level swing path. He has strength in his swing and shows a feel for the barrel with power showing best to the pull side. Power will increase as he utilizes his lower half more efficiently. On the mound, he continues to shine. Delivery is sound / repeatable allowing his arm action to work free to the plate. Fastball showed a range of 81-83 mph with arm side run. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a feel for pitch with arm side run. Control is solid as he throws strikes with all his pitches. Stock on the mound will continue to improve as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. With 2 years to further develop, Nathan has the makings of a special type player with time and room to progress his game, possibly as a two-way guy.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "present" abilities (tools), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year, using the scale below. However, grades 10-18 are not available for use with High School players (ages 14-18), while grades 55-70 are not available for use with Pre High School players (ages 12-14). These instances are marked as "--- N/A ---" in the "Description" fields below.
