Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • RHPPosition Projection

06/17/2008 - College PREP - Washington (Pittsburgh), PA Nathan is a RHP with a tall frame for the mound. His body shows projection as it continues to physically mature. Arm strength is slightly above average and he will benefit by getting on a strict long toss program to continue to develop. Fast ball is straight but he utilizes his body to throw on a strong downhill plane. Breaking ball is his best off speed pitch showing an 11/5 shape with plus tight spin. Change up is average but did flash potential when he stays closed. He displays a consistent quick, loose arm action. Command is above average with all his pitches. He stays down in the zone with his fast ball. Nathan has ability and if arm strength and velocity improves he will get some looks from the college coaches.

06/05/2008 - Under Armour Southeast Regional Tournament - 2008 Saltzer ran 7.18 in the 60-yard dash, quite a bit better than the 7.44 we had recorded for him previously. He topped out at 85 mph in his first game outing, near the 86 mph top bolt we saw from him in April. When he kept his arm slot up, between high three quarters and overhand, he commanded his fastball well and got some arm side life on it. Needs to avoid to the tendency for the arm slot to fall, this caused his arm to drag a little and his fastball flattened out. His breaking ball had sharp, tight downward action at times - proved to have potential to be an above average pitch when he was able to break it down out of the zone. His delivery had good tempo, allowing his arm time to work out of the glove. He showed good arm speed out front, evident both in the life on his fastball and tight spin on his breaking ball. Has room to improve his overall physical strength, there is room for him to fill out his long and lean frame - giving him more upside potential.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
