Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • RHP/OFPosition Projection

01/13/2017 - Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament Byrd is a solid/strong/projectable RHP/OF. On the mound, this righty works to a tall/controlled balance point and has smooth separation. He drives downhill and finishes complete. FB shows natural sink which hitters have a tough time squaring up. Breaking ball shows 11/5 shape as he commands it well. Changeup has good run and is thrown with FB arm speed, helping to create deception. In the OF, Nathaniel hustles to track down fly-balls to his right and left and works into position behind the ball. He plays through it well and works in-line toward his target. Arm is loose with life with strength and accuracy on his throws. Offensively, this righty displays an open setup with rhythm to load. He likes the pitch on the inner 1/2 and pulls it with pop (collecting a triple and a single with 3 RBI's at the event). Nathaniel is a well rounded athlete who can make things happen in a variety of ways.

06/29/2016 - Under Armour Firecracker Classic 18U, powered by Baseball Factory's Team One Nathaniel continues to show improvements in his baseball tools with a promising future on the diamond. At the plate, he improved his hitting abilities through an athletic setup. Hands are quick (88 mph exit velocity) and work to stay inside the ball, utilizing all fields, displaying gap to gap pop. In the OF, he displays smooth, fluid actions. Feet are active as he takes proper routes/angles in tracking down balls. He works to get behind the ball and plays through with momentum to his target. On the mound, fastball shows in the mid-80 range with sinking action. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with late break. Control is solid as he throws strikes with all his pitches. Mental makeup is a plus as he has a great personality, is very coachable and works hard to be the best player he can be.

02/14/2016 - College PREP - Brentwood (Long Island), NY Byrd is a projectable RHP/OF (6'4"/210) who has a ton of talent. On the bump, this RHP has an effective 3-pitch arsenal (FB, CB, CH) coming from a high 3/4 arm slot. He works to a tall balance point and drives downhill toward the dish. FB jumps out of his hand and cracks the mitt at 84 mph with 'heavy' action. Curveball has 12/6 shape with late/sharp break which shows to be a solid "K" pitch. Changeup has good sinking action and will get a lot of GB outs. In the OF, he takes long strides and tracks down fly-balls hit into the gaps. He works behind and through the ball aggressively and works in-line toward his target, firing strong throws with carry. Offensively, Nathaniel displays a balanced setup with a strong base. He whips the barrel with speed, connects with power and drives the ball to the gaps (exit velocity = 88 mph). Bryd has a very bright future ahead of him in the game.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
