10/14/2015 - Arizona Junior Fall Classic Nelson performed well again at the AZ Fall Classic, this time as a Junior. Defensively, he showed all the signs of a next level shortstop with feel for the position and a clean arm stroke with some carry to first. He had good hands, flashed plus range and showed an ability to play 2B & 3B with skill. Offensively, the switch hitter was athletic in his setup and worked the barrel down to the baseball. He made line-drive/ ground ball contact and was selective at the plate, drawing 4 walks. Continued work on both sides of the dish is crucial to his development and ability to switch at the next level. Overall - Nelson continues to show all the signs of a next level player with plus athleticism and instincts.

10/01/2014 - Arizona Freshman/Sophomore Fall Classic Nelson flashed a subtle glove and plus hit ability from both sides of the dish at the Arizona Freshman / Sophomore Fall Classic. Defensively, he move well right and left and got his body into a good position to field balls. He currently stands up tall to throw, which prohibits leg use and velocity on his throws. Offensively, he has good feel for the barrel and is direct down to contact. He is simple with his approach and has solid coordination with his hands/hips. Using more of his lower half to add pop and continuing to get reps from both sides will increase overall hit ability. Nelson is an interesting follow that offers a lot of promising.

08/10/2014 - College PREP - Reno, NV Nelson is a skilled, switch-hitting SS. Defensively, he shows quick/active pre-pitch footwork as he moves around the ground ball and through it from right to left. Ball is quick from glove to hand as he gets rid of it across the diamond. With the bat, this RHH shows a balanced approach with fluid rhythm. Swing path is level as he connects and drives the ball to all parts of the field. He has quick footwork (proven by his 60 time of 6.95) as he gets out of the box and down the line. Only a 2017 grad - Nelson has a bright future in the game.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
