08/13/2011 - Under Armour All-America Game 2011 Nick Basto (#12) came in the game at 3B for Carson Kelly in the fifth inning, and took over the second slot in the batting order. He showed a plus arm from shortstop on the workout day, and then again (and more impressively so) during pre-game infield on Saturday morning - I had him with the second best infield throwing arm, just behind Yairo Munoz of the National team. He is a talented defensive player, with the ability to play both middle infield positions as well as third base. His right handed stroke had looseness and life through the zone. Basto attended the Team One Futures Game East last October, and before that played for Baseball Factory in the USA Baseball 16U Championships. He is headed to the University of Miami.

09/25/2010 - Team One Futures Game 2010 - EAST Nicholas has a strong frame standing at 6'2/185 pounds. Defensively he has good actions, quick hands, and an average major league arm. He moves well laterally and is very smooth. At the plate, he has a level bat path, balanced approach, and good rhythm. Nick has very strong hands and good barrel accuracy. Nick is a gap to gap hitter with current average major league power. He will be a great addition to the University of Miami baseball program.

06/19/2009 - USA Baseball 16U Championships (FL) - 2009 Nicholas is a young, 2012 graduate two-way player at 2B/SS with a tall, athletic, and thin looking frame that shows plus future projection as he continues to physically mature and fill out. Foot speed is above average as indicated by his 7.04 60 time as he utilizes his quick, athletic feet in his lateral movement, displaying range. Feet are active and aggressive in taking proper angles in getting around balls, playing through with momentum to his target. Glove action is soft, clean, and sure in making all the plays. He made several diving plays and has the arm to finish plays, throwing out runners. Hands and feet work well together through the fielding and throwing process displaying outstanding defensive abilities in the middle of the IF. Arm strength is outstanding as he shows plus life, carry, and accuracy. He shows the ability to make all throws from all angles. He was the best defensive player on his squad. At the plate, Basto has above average abilities with solid average power. He shows a solid knowledge of the strike zone and shows a plus load as he stays within himself and does not over swing. Power is a plus when he lets the ball travel showing gap to gap power. He was 5 for 10 at the event with 2B and shows the potential to be a solid D1 hitter. Nicholas has a ton of potential with the makings to be a special type player, getting looks not only from the collegiate coaches but pro scouts as well. It will be fun to watch him continue to develop.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
