08/16/2014 - Under Armour All-America Game, powered by Baseball Factory An outstanding mix of tools and instincts, Nicholas can really play the game. He swings the bat with natural rhythm and generates serious bat speed through the zone, making consistent hard contact. As a defender, Nicholas has quick feet, soft hands, a quick release and plenty of arm strength across the diamond. He has present strength and is an excellent athlete helping to make all of his tools usable right now. Nicholas is the son of former Major League player, Terry Shumpert.

05/04/2014 - National Tryout - Lakewood (Denver), CO Nicholas continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities, showing pro abilities with the makings of a top draft in 2015. Foot speed has really improved as he ran his best 60 time to date, now a tremendous runner as indicated by his 6.54 60 time. He utilizes his quick / athletic feet well in his lateral movements, displaying superior range in the MIF. Hands / feet work well together through the fielding process as he shows big play potential. Athletic abilities are shown off his feeds / turns of the double play and slow rollers. Arm strength is at a pro level as he gets rid of the baseball quickly with accuracy, life, and late explosion across the diamond. At the plate, he continues to shine as he shows big league hitting abilities and power. He works to stay inside the ball, utilizing all fields with late explosion through the ball. Lower half works well through the swing as he will hit and hit with power to all fields.

05/05/2013 - College PREP - Lakewood (Denver), CO Nicholas is a very highly talented SS both offensively and defensively. This strong and athletic, right-handed hitter has an aggressive approach as he delivers the barrel with authority. The ball explodes off of his bat as he shows power to all fields. He will be a run-producing machine and is a clean up type of hitter. At SS, Shumpert moves fluidly and effortlessly around the ground ball. This smooth fielding SS has a cannon as he fires the ball across the diamond. Nicholas has a bright future in the game and will turn some heads over the next couple of years.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
