Official Scouting Report

  • OFPosition Projection

01/17/2014 - Under Armour Pre-Season All-America Tournament Collins continues to impress on the diamond. This quick OF takes a good first step and works into position behind the ball. He has a quick exchange and a cannon for an arm, firing the ball into his target wanting runners to test him. Offensively, Nick shows good rhythm in his hands and gets back into a loaded position. Quick hands deliver the barrel on a short/direct path, creating consistent/hard contact. A solid frame and all-around plus tools make this OF an exciting prospect to keep an eye on.

12/27/2013 - Baseball Factory Christmas Camp & Tournament at Pirate City Nick displayed good athleticism, and the ability to be a vocal leader during his time in Pirate City. Offensively, Nick has a rhythmic / level swing, good balance, and quick bat speed. He has an activated load, good barrel accuracy, and some pop in his bat. In the OF, Nick has athletic actions, he gets in a good ready position, and his hands are sure. He reads the ball off the bat well, and throws with some carry to his target.

09/29/2013 - National Tryout - Charlotte, NC Collins has really improved his baseball abilities and projects as a solid collegiate player at the next level. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date, now an above average runner at 7.18. Defensive grades in the OF are now outstanding as he utilizes his quick / athletic feet well in taking proper routes / angles in tracking down balls. He moves well laterally, displaying range and works to get behind balls, playing through well with momentum to his target. Throws show accuracy, life, and on line carry into his target. At the plate, Nick continues to shine through a squared / athletic setup with rhythm. Hands are quick, generating bat speed through a level swing path. He has strength in his swing with the baseball exploding off the bat when centered as he uses his lower half well.

07/29/2013 - College PREP - Gaffney, SC Nick is a solid OF/IF with a strong lower half that will graduate in 2014. Currently, he projects slightly better defensively at 3B for the next level. Feet are active as he works around balls and plays through well, presenting hands well out front as he makes all the plays. In the OF, he takes proper routes / angles in tracking down balls and flashes range. For defensive grade to continue to improve, he needs to work to get behind balls more to play through with momentum to his target and improve foot quickness. At the plate, Collins shows a squared setup with balance / rhythm. He loads well with hands generating plus bat speed through a level swing path. Barrel accuracy is a plus with baseball exploding off the bat when centered. Nick has a ton of potential and will catch the eyes of the collegiate coaches with his baseball abilities.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "present" abilities (tools), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year, using the scale below. However, grades 10-18 are not available for use with High School players (ages 14-18), while grades 55-70 are not available for use with Pre High School players (ages 12-14). These instances are marked as "--- N/A ---" in the "Description" fields below.
