01/13/2017 - Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament Nick's strength and athleticism play his tools up all over the field. He can sling it on the hill with a quick arm, pumping 82mph and good break on his curve. He finishes well with a long stride and commands the ball to both sides of the plate. He works with rhythm at first, showing good footwork around the bag. He's athletic to field and can pick it to help out his infielders. Pop is evident at the dish with a level path and rhythm to swing it. He stays balanced throughout and makes consistent, square contact with pull pop. Nick is a true gamer when he steps between those white lines.

11/05/2016 - 2016 Under Armour Showcase: Baseball Factory's Futures Texas Nick continues to get better each time we see him, and showed well at the UABF Futures event in Texas. He is a versatile defender who probably profiles best in LF, but can play RF and 3B as well and can even jump on the mound. In the outfield he tracks balls well, has good hands, and moves through both ground balls and fly balls to throw. His arm is extremely accurate with some online carry. At the plate Nick employs a short LH stroke that leads to line drive contact to all fields. He has quick hands, with a little stiffness through contact into the finish, and controlled the barrel well in BP. Nick's versatility, attitude and LH bat make him a quality prospect.

01/15/2016 - Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament Nick showed as a 3B/RHP at the Preseason All American and continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities with the makings of a special type player at the next level. At the plate, hitting abilities have improved the most, now showing outstanding hitting / power potential through an athletic setup. Hands are quick, generating bat speed through a level swing path. He shows a feel for the barrel with baseball jumping off the bat when centered as he works to keep hand inside the ball to utilize all fields and displaying gap to gap pop. At 3B, he is fundamentally sound, displaying smooth fluid actions. He moves well laterally with hands / feet working well together as he gets rid of the baseball quickly with accuracy and on line carry to his throws. On the mound, fastball showed in the low 80 range with 2 quality off speed pitches that will get outs at the next level. He shows good mound presence and attacks hitters as he throws strikes with all his pitches. Nick is a sure player to follow and will get looks from the collegiate coaches, possibly as a two-way guy.

06/13/2015 - Omaha National World Series - Session 1 Petro showed as a RHP and in the OF for the first time with improvements in his baseball abilities and a promising future on the diamond. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date at 7.19. In the OF, he utilizes his quick feet in covering a lot of ground and works to get behind balls, playing through with momentum to his target. He showed good game awareness and does a nice job of backing up bases. At the plate, he shows an athletic setup from the left side. Hands are quick and work through a level swing path. He shows a feel for the barrel and works to keep hands inside the ball, utilizing all fields, displaying gap to gap power. Power numbers will continue to improve as he learns to use his lower half more. At the event, he was 5 for 11 with a 2B. Once on base, he utilizes his quick feet and great game instincts to take the extra base. On the mound, arm strength has improved as he threw his top velocity to date, topping out at 85 mph as he hides the ball well. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a feel for with arm side run. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he develops better off speed pitch and works to throw more strikes. Mental makeup is a plus as he has a great personality, is very coachable and works hard to be the best player he can be.

02/01/2015 - College PREP - Houston, TX Nick is a C/RHP with a 6'1/180 lbs frame and is a freshman that hits from the left side. Offensively, he drives the baseball with good balance and delivers the barrel on a direct path down to contact to generate good bat speed. He is coordinated with his hands & hips and makes consistent line-drive contact. Defensively behind the dish, he sees the ball into the mitt and sticks pitches. He throws with a clean arm stroke to 2B, flashing pops in the 2.1 - 2.2 range. Staying looser with his actions and becoming more sure with his glove are key to his development. On the mound, he threw a FB from 76-78, spun a CB from 66-68, and showed feel for a sinking CH at 68-69. He was mechanically sound, and worked square to the dish with his direction. All in all - Nick showed a lot of potential with his ability at his first Baseball Factory outing and we look forward to tracking his progress throughout high school.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
