08/03/2011 - Pirate City World Series 2011 - Session 1 Rabat improved his low end pop time, down from 2.13 to 2.00 since we saw him last in July 2011. He again showed good arm strength, along with good footwork and overall catch and throw skills. His blocking skills were solid as well. In this opportunity to see him play, we were able to see his ability to call a good game along with a solid overall feel for the game behind the plate. At the plate, he setup well and used his lower half well through his swing. Did a good job of getting through pitches middle and in, but tended to pull off a bit early with front side on pitches away - a common flaw at this level. His build is athletic and he has some strength, while his overall actions have life - giving him a good combination of skill and ability to play the game.

07/13/2011 - College PREP - Washington DC, MD Nick showed several improvements in his overall game during his workout in Washington, DC. He raised his velocity from 81 to 83 MPH, and his arm grade from 42 to 48. Behind the plate, Nick has a wide base, soft / sure hands, and he gets around the ball. He has quiet actions, catches in a low / athletic position, and he gets rid of the ball quickly. Nick has a short / loose arm action, and he throws with accuracy and carry to 2nd base. If Nick can get to his feet without using his hands and continue to add arm strength, solid defensive numbers will get even better. At the plate, Nick a strong hitter with fast bat speed and a good lower 1/2. He keeps his hands inside the ball, he has good balance, and he makes hard / consistent contact. Nick swings in good rhythm, he has a line drive approach, and he has plus barrel accuracy.

04/17/2011 - College PREP - Ashburn (DC), VA Nick is a tall, athletic catcher that will graduate in 2012. Foot speed is near average as he will benefit by getting on a speed / agility program to improve foot quickness for the next level. Feet are active in working in line to his target through a quick transfer / exchange. He gets rid of the baseball quickly with pop times displaying a range of 2.13-2.23 but needs to raise his sights to improve accuracy. Receiving and blocking skills show potential as being quality tools at the next level. He displays a quiet, flexible stance allowing his hands to work softly, around the baseball. Lateral movement is a plus behind the plate as he gets down and around balls, deadening out front. Offensively, Rabat shows a squared, athletic stance and loads well allowing his hands to attack the baseball. Barrel accuracy is a plus as he makes consistent, hard contact. Power is best to the pull side as he will benefit by letting the ball travel to keep hands inside the ball to utilize all fields. Nick has a lot of potential and will catch the eyes of the collegiate coaches with his baseball abilities.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
