08/02/2020 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City - Session 2 (Ages 14-18) Nicolas continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities and worked hard on his skills during his time at Pirate City. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date. Behind the plate he shows a squared setup and tracks the ball well into a soft mitt. He utilizes his body well through the blocking process, centering balls well out front. Pop times have improved as he threw his lowest time to date at 2.19 with accuracy on his throws down to 2B. At the plate, he continues to show as a switch hitter with similar abilities from both sides. He has fluid rhythm while getting good hand separation on his load. Hands are quick and work through a level swing path. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 72-75 mph with cutting action. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with tight spin and late break. Control is solid as he attacks hitters and throws strikes with all his pitches. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. Mental makeup is a plus as he is very coachable and has great knowledge of the game. He hustles all over and plays the game with a lot of energy.

02/16/2020 - National Tryout Plus - Highland Park (DFW), TX Nicolas showed as a RHP/3B at the event and has a bright future on the diamond. At the plate, he shows as a switch hitter with similar abilities from both sides. Hands are quick and work through an aggressive swing path. He makes consistent contact through a line drive approach with power showing best to the pull side. Power will continue to improve as he utilizes his lower half more efficiently. At 3B, he displays clean/smooth actions. Feet are active as he works around balls but needs to play through more with his body. Glove action is clean but needs to present more out front. On the mound, he gathers over the rubber and separates his hands on time. He shows a three pitch mix with his fastball topping out at 74 mph. Fastball shows arm side run. Breaking ball sits from 61-63 mph with 11/4 shape with gradual break. Changeup sits 62-64 mph with arm side run.

01/26/2020 - College PREP - Mont Belvieu (Houston), TX Nicolas is a C/SS who has a promising future on the diamond. Behind the plate, feet are active as he works in line through a clean transfer/exchange. Pop times show a range of 2.30 with accuracy on his throws. Times will continue to drop as he continues to build more arm strength through a long toss program and works to get rid of the baseball quicker. He shows a squared setup and presents a soft mitt out front and utilizes his body through the blocking process but needs to work to get down sooner. At SS, feet are active as he works to square balls up but needs to play through more with his body. Glove action is clean but needs to present more out front. Range will increase as he improves foot quickness. At the plate, he shows as a switch hitter with similar abilities from both sides. Hands are quick and work through level swing path. He makes consistent contact through a line drive approach with power showing best to the pull side. Power will continue to improve as he utilizes his lower half more efficiently. With 3 1/2 years to further develop, Nicolas has potential with time and room to progress his game.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
