Official Scouting Report

  • OF/LHPPosition Projection

08/03/2016 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City - Session 1 Nolen is a talented OF/LHP with great foot speed (6.98 60 time). In the field, Nolen has quick feet and uses fluid movements to cover ground when tracking down fly balls. He fields the ball with soft hands and has a clean exchange to throw. He releases the ball quickly which allows his throws to carry and stay on line to his target. Nolen can improve defensively by keeping his arm extended throughout his throwing motion. At the plate, Nolen sets up in a closed stance and takes his stride on time to meet the ball. He is smooth getting back into his load and comes through the zone well with his lower half. He generates good bat speed and keeps his swing on plane which leads to consistent contact and power. Nolen can improve as a hitter by lowering his hands in his stance. On the mound, Nolen has an athletic set up and a good delivery. His fastball ranges form 76-81mph with good cutting action. Nolen can improve as a pitcher by incorporating a long toss program to build up his arm strength. Overall, Nolen is a talented prospect who has the tools and potential to contribute at the next level.

11/01/2015 - College PREP - Midland, TX Nolen is a versatile, LHH 2-way player (OF/LHP) who has an athletic build. With the bat, this lefty shows an athletic/balanced setup with a solid base. Barrel delivery is quick as he connects and drives the ball to all parts of the field. He creates extension through contact resulting in good pop. In the OF, Nolen takes a quick first step with solid routes/angles to track down fly-balls. He has athletic actions, secures the ball with 2-hands and has a quick/clean exchange to throw with carry into his target. On the mound, this LHP has a 3-pitch mix (FB, CB, CH) coming from a high 3/4 arm slot and loose/free arm action. He works to a tall/controlled balance point, has smooth separation and stays directional toward the dish. FB ranges from 76-78 mph while showing slight sink. He has good command and can hit his spots. Breaking ball shows 2/8 shape (66-68 mph) while changeup is thrown with FB arm speed and has some sink. More glove-side lead and more lower 1/2 drive off of the rubber will help to get more into his FB. Hester is a talented player who has a bright future ahead of him.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
