10/14/2012 - College PREP - Hoover (Birmingham), AL Recke showed a RHP and hitter at the event. Delivery is sound / repeatable displaying proper mechanics that allows his arm to work loose / free to the plate. Arm action is long and easy through a high 3/4 arm slot. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual breaking action. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a solid feel for with fading action. Pitch will get outs at the next level. Command / control are a plus as he throws strikes with all his pitches, changing speeds well. Stock on the mound will improve quickly as more arm strength is gained. As a hitter, Recke showed a solid set up and ability to keep his hands inside the ball while displaying some power and working gap to gap. He showed good rhythm and has an on time approach.

08/06/2012 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City - Session 2 Orion has worked very hard the last few months and we have seen him three times this summer. Each time we see him, he has shown us noticeable improvements with his evaluation. At Pirate City, he showed well both on the mound and in the OF. On the hill, Orion has a good frame, he hides the ball well, and he has good direction toward the plate. He finishes in an athletic position and throws strikes with all of his pitches. He can work on using his legs more consistently and not rushing through his balance point out of the stretch. In the OF, Orion has good range, he works through the ball well, and he throws with good carry to his target. During gameplay, he made a great catch. At the plate, this was the best we have seen Orion hit. He has a level swing path, good bat speed, and he gets proper extension through the ball. He swings in good rhythm, and uses his lower 1/2 well. He can be more aggressive at times in his hitting approach, but we like the adjustments he has made over the last couple of months. He always works hard and is very coachable, and we feel he will be a good addition to a college program.

07/07/2012 - Cape Cod Select Training & Competition - Session 1 Orion is a tall, strong, and athletic RHP/OF that will graduate in 2013. As an outfielder, he got good jumps on the ball and really gained ground quick. He took good routes and angles on both ground balls and fly balls. He really stood out from the rest in Cape Cod when it came to going back on balls and covering ground going back. I would like to see him work behind fly balls more to get his momentum going back towards the infield. He could also clean up his footwork to throw a little more so that he could get rid of the ball quicker and use more of that lower half to help him get through the throws with more carry. At the plate, Recke shows a balanced approach with rhythm. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed as he works to stay inside the ball, utilizing all fields. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 80-82 mph with arm side run. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup showing a feel for with arm side run. Mental makeup is a plus as he has a positive attitude and works hard to be the best he can be. Orion has a lot of abilities with a lot of room to improve, and he has already shown us a lot of improvement since we first saw him earlier this year.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
