02/12/2017 - College PREP - Stockton (Sacramento), CA Oscar is a strong, athletic two-way prospect with loud tools across the board. He has an absolute cannon for an arm and shows it off both gunning down base stealers and on the mound. He is a plus defensive catcher with quick hands and feet that allow him to block quickly and get rid of the ball quickly (2.00 pop time). His setup is quiet and athletic, square to the pitcher and receives with firm hands to stick pitches in the zone for strikes. He is very aggressive at the dish, looking to attack the first pitch he sees and drive it with good power. He is smooth in his swing with good balance and he works on a level path to the ball with a strong lower half to make consistent, square contact. On the bump, he features four legitimate offerings including a low 80's fastball with sink, an 11-5 curveball, a slider into the low 70's and a changeup with some arm side movement. He gets to a good balance point over the rubber and has strong hips to generate power to the plate with a solid front side to keep his arm in sync. Being more deliberate down the mound will keep his mechanics on time and result in more command moving forward. Oscar is a very exciting prospect who we expect to see at the next level.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
