Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • CPosition Projection

10/05/2022 - Arizona Sophomore Fall Classic (2025) Owen is a solid catcher with a strong upside in the 2025 class. Behind the plate, he has quick feet (7.28 runner). Has a low athletic stance and sits under the baseball well. He presents a solid pocket and his hands are soft. Uses a short arm circle for a quick release (2.14 pop) that is consistently on the bag. Reads pitches in the dirt and positions himself to block and recover. Working to quicken his catch to release should put own into the sub 2.0 range in the very near future. At the plate, he generates hard contact for line drive production to the gaps. Stays balanced and has smooth timing. Stays short in his controlled load and creates above average bat speed (85 exit velo). Aside from the skilled baseball actions, Owen has the intangibles of being coachable, strong work ethic and is a team player. These traits are the backbone of the catching position and Owen checks all these boxes.

09/11/2022 - Official College Recruiting Membership - Thousand Oaks, CA Owen is an impressive catcher in the 2025 class. Scouts raved about his athletic ability (6.99 runner) , confidence and polished actions. Creates a strong quiet target for his pitchers. He says low to the ground, has hip flexibility and allows the pitch to travel. His soft hands allow him to maintain the strike zone and keep his thumb under the baseball. He can shut down the running game with a quick release (2.02 pop) and is around the bag. His glove leads on his blocking and has controlled movements on pitches in the dirt. Developing further arm strength will only enhance his ability on his throws. At the plate, he has power potential. He tracks the baseball well and uses a strong lower half base to drive the baseball. He is a discipline hitter and rarely chases pitches out of the zone. Working with a high tee, will allow more of a direct approach and use his strength the backspin baseballs. Overall, Owen is a solid backstop and has a bright future.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
