07/15/2017 - Cape Cod Select Training & Competition - Session 2 (Ages 14-18) Payne is a hardworking RHP/3B prospect who has a versatile skill set and graduates in 2020. On the mound, Payne has a balanced, on-time delivery throwing from a high 3/4 arm slot. He has a clean arm action and extends through his release. Payne stays square to home plate with a controlled landing at the proper stride length. He effectively finishes with his chest over his front knee. Payne does a nice job repeating his mechanics and keeps his head on his target. He works downhill with his fastball and is developing his changeup. Offensively, Payne has a square, athletic stance with a centered balance. He has good rhythm with an effective load and short stride as he partially uses his lower half throughout his swing. Payne shows fast bat speed with a direct swing path producing hard contact. He has the ability to drive the ball to the pull side. In the field, Payne plays with active footwork and creates effective angles. He presents his glove and fields the ball in a high position. He has a long arm action and throws from a 3/4 arm slot. He does a nice job squaring up to his target for his throws and is building arm strength. Overall, Payne has a well-rounded skill set with a good approach to the game giving him upside to get even better with development.

11/10/2016 - Baseball Factory Select Training & Competition at Pirate City Payne is a very respectful and coachable right handed hitting 3rd baseman and RHP. Offensively, he showed power to his pull side, as he did a fine job keeping his balance centered and his hands on a direct path to the baseball. Utilizing more of his lower 1/2, by exploding his hips to the pitcher while making contact, will help to improve his power. Payne showed well on the mound, as he kept his delivery simple and repeatable, showing a good balance point, good direction, and a strong front side. He featured a 2 pitch mix from a high 3/4 arm angle, including a 56-60 mph fastball and a changeup in the low 50's which he could throw for strikes and keep hitters off balance with. At the hot corner, his best asset was his arm, as he made consistently accurate throws to first base with loose arm action. Working to improve footwork by adding agility drills to his training regimen will help him work more efficiently with his feet when fielding. Only a 2020 graduate with still room to grow on the field, Payne will be exciting to track as he continues to progress.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
