12/20/2015 - Baseball Factory Christmas Camp & Tournament at Pirate City - Session 1 Gooch is a 2016 graduate that showed the ability to play all over the field and a hard-working approach at Pirate City. Defensively, Payton showed a good set up and played through a clean exchange with sure hands. Gooch should look to be more aggressive with his routes to the baseball and have a bit more of an attacking mentality in the OF. He displayed a quality arm stroke that kept his throws accurate and on-line to the target. At the plate, Payton worked from a square set up and will benefit from developing a consistent stride and load complex to get himself into a solid launch position. There is good balance for Payton and he does show fluidity to the stroke and the ability to drive through the baseball at contact with a loose finish. This versatile athlete will benefit from his hard-working approach to have a solid senior season in 2016.

11/08/2015 - College PREP - Germantown (Memphis), TN Payton is an athletic OF/SS that will graduate in 2016 with a promising future on the diamond. Foot speed is outstanding as indicated by his 6.90 60 time. At the plate is where he shows best through an open / balanced setup. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed to and through a level swing path, creating extension. He works to keep hands inside the ball to utilize all fields, displaying gap to gap pop. Power numbers will increase as he works to utilize his lower half more aggressively through the swing. In the OF, he takes proper routes / angles in tracking down balls. He moves well laterally and covers a lot of ground, displaying range. Defensive grade will continue to improve as he works to get behind balls more to play through with momentum to his target. Throws are accurate with carry as he gets rid of the baseball quickly in the OF. At SS, feet are active as he works to square balls up, displaying clean hands. He moves well side to side, showing best to glove side. Defensive grade will continue to improve as he attacks balls more, play through while presenting hands more out front. Payton has a lot of potential and will catch the eyes of the collegiate coaches with his baseball abilities as he continues to develop.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
