Official Scouting Report

07/04/2018 - Under Armour Firecracker Classic 18U, powered by Baseball Factory's Team One Payton continues to show as a prospect on the diamond. On the mound, delivery is sound / repeatable allowing his arm action to work free to the plate. He shows good tempo through a strong balance point and creates deception. Fastball showed a range of 80-82 mph with sinking action. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual break and shows a good feel for pitch. He maintains arm speed on his changeup with sinking action. At the event, he had 2 solid outings and made good adjustments. He shows good mound demeanor and maintains composure. Stock on the mound will continue to increase as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program At SS, he displays clean / smooth actions. Feet are active as he displays proper footwork as he works to square ground balls up but needs to attack and play through balls more. Glove action is soft and presents well out front. Range is a plus as he moves well laterally and covers ground. At the plate, he shows an athletic / squared setup with rhythm. Hands are quick (88 mph exit velocity) and work through a level swing path. He makes consistent contact and shows a feel for the barrel with power showing best to the pull side. Working to get stride foot down sooner will aid in improving hitting grade. Mental makeup is a plus as he has a positive attitude, works hard, and is very coachable.

04/22/2018 - College PREP - Louisville, KY Payton is a solid RHP/SS who has a promising future on the diamond. Foot speed is well above average as indicated by his 60 time of 7.15. On the mound, delivery is sound / repeatable allowing his arm action to work free to the plate. He shows good tempo through a strong balance point. Arm strength is outstanding as indicated by his top velocity of 86 mph. Fastball showed a range of 83-86 mph with arm side run. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup with tailing action. Control is solid as he throws strikes with all his pitches. Stock on the mound will continue to increase as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. At SS, he displays smooth / clean actions. Feet are active and he displays proper footwork but needs to play through balls more with his body. Glove action is soft /sure and he presents well out front. Range is a plus as he moves well laterally and covers a lot ground. At the plate he shows a squared setup. Hands are loose and work through an aggressive swing path. He makes consistent contact through a line drive approach. Power will increase as he utilizes his lower half more efficiently. Payton has a big upside on the mound and will get looks from the collegiate coaches as he continues to progress his game.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
