Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • RHPPosition Projection

09/20/2015 - College PREP - Austin, TX Payton is a (6'0"/240) RHP who has a projectable frame. On the mound, this righty has a 3-pitch mix (FB, CB, CH) coming from a loose arm action. FB ranges from 65-67 mph as he throws it for strikes consistently. Curveball shows 10/4 shape as he gets on the side of it. By working to stay on top and become more consistent with his release point, CB action will improve. Changeup shows some sink as he throws it with FB arm speed. More lower 1/2 drive (by utilizing his strong build) and getting more finish on his follow through will help to improve effectiveness on all pitches. As a hitter - Payton shows a square setup with rhythm in his hands. He gets good hand separation with leverage as he lets the ball travel deep into the zone. He squares the ball up and drives the middle of the field. More power potential is there with added lower 1/2 drive. A 2017 grad - Payton has a lot of upside with still time to fine tune his skills on the mound.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
