02/23/2019 - College Recruiting Day - Sioux Falls, SD Payton is an athletic OF prospect who continues to show improvements on the field. In the OF, Payton shows active footwork and is aggressive attacking the ball. He gets into a square position and fields the ball out in front of his body. He makes a clean exchange and gains momentum well on his throws, keeping them consistently on-line to his target. At the plate, this RHH sets up in a crouched stance and takes a square stride. He is smooth getting back into his load and leads well with his lower half. He takes a direct swing with fast bat speed, leading to solid gap to gap pop. Overall, Payton is a talented prospect who should find success in this, his sophomore season.

02/25/2018 - College PREP - Sioux Falls, SD Payton is an athletic SS prospect who will graduate in 2021. In the field, Payton shows quick footwork and gains ground on the ball. He gets into an athletic fielding position and makes the routine play. He has a clean exchange with a quick release on his throws and keeps the accurate and on-line to his target. Payton can improve defensively by staying low when moving to throw. At the plate, this RHH sets up in a square stance and takes a short stride. He is fluid getting into his load and comes through well with his lower half. He takes a direct swing with fast bat speed which leads to square contact to all fields. Payton can improve as a hitter by keeping his head still in his load. With three more years to develop, Payton has the time and potential to further progress his skills on the field.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
