01/13/2017 - Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament Payton showed as a catcher and on the mound for the first time at the event. He is a prospect with a tremendous future on the diamond. On the mound, he displays a sound / repeatable delivery, working in line and on time allowing his arm to work loose / free to the plate. Arm strength is outstanding as indicated by his top velocity of 86 mph. Fastball showed good tailing action. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup with tailing action. Off speed stuff show potential as being quality pitches. Control is solid as he throws strikes with all his pitches. He shows good composure and competes on the mound. Behind the plate, feet are active as he gains ground and works through a clean / transfer exchange as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. Pop times showed in the 2.02 range. Throws display accuracy and on line carry through his target. Hands are soft as he lets the ball travel and tracks well, sticking in the zone. He shows off his athletic abilities through the blocking process with tool improving as he creates better angles to deaden ball. At the plate, he shows an athletic setup. Hands are quick and work through an aggressive swing path. He has strength in his swing and shows great barrel accuracy with power showing best to the pull side.

09/18/2016 - College PREP - Oklahoma City, OK Payton is a catching prospect to watch who graduates in 2019. Offensively, Payton has an athletic, open stance and his lower half leading the way with a short, square stride. He takes a load and has explosive bat speed with a direct swing path gaining extension at contact. Payton has smooth rhythm and gets separation with his hands to produce line drive results and power to each gap. Behind the plate, Payton plays with fluid, active footwork giving him agile range and strong lateral mobility. He receives the ball well and has a quick exchanged coupled with a quick release. Payton has arm strength with his POP times ranging from 1.99-2.09 second. Payton is a solid prospect with great potential as he continues to mature.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
