Official Scouting Report

08/14/2022 - Official Player Development Membership - Oak Creek (Milwaukee), WI Payton is a RHP prospect who will graduate in 2026. Medium frame athletic build with strength present. At the plate, he hits from an upright and closed stance. Does a good job keeping a repeatable stride and keeping balanced throughout his swing. Does a good job keeping his hands inside the ball and getting extension out front. Shows the ability to hit the ball to all fields with a bat exit velocity up to 64mph. On the mound, he shows clean mechanics with the ability to repeat at times. Does a good job getting into his lower 1/2 and trying to work downhill. He attacks hitters with a FB that sits 70-71mph with plus command, an 11/5 shaped CB with good arm speed, an 11/5 shaped slider that he throws for strikes, and a changeup with arm side run that he throws with FB arm speed. Payton is a good player that we hope to see again as he continues to develop.

12/27/2021 - Baseball Factory West Coast Winter Classic Payton is an athletic 2026 RHP/OF out of Homewood, IL. On defense, he showed a quick first step by getting out of his breaks and covering ground. He worked through the baseball in a low fielding position with his glove out front. He made quick clean exchanges and accurate throws with carry to his cuts/bags. At the plate, he used a square stance with a short stride and good timing to find balance in his swing. He fired his back side through the zone with an on plane bat path to hit line drives all over the field. On the mound, he had excellent poise with simple mechanics to deliver a two pitch mix with command. His fastball topped out at 65 mph while his breaking ball ranged from 56-57 mph. Payton could benefit from programs/drills such as angle bp, tee work, long toss, flexibility/mobility, strength training, speed & agility.

12/12/2021 - All-In Membership - Lynwood (Chicago), IL Payton is a lean RHP/OF who has a promising future on the diamond. Foot speed is well above average as indicated by his 60 time of 7.26. In the OF, he displays smooth / fluid actions. He takes proper routes / angles in tracking down balls. Feet are active as he works to get behind balls but needs to play through with momentum to his target. He moves well laterally with range and utilizes his foot quickness in covering a lot of ground. At the plate, he shows an open setup. Hands are quick and work through an aggressive swing path. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. Power will increase as he utilizes his lower half more efficiently. On the mound, he shows a three-pitch mix with his fastball topping out at 65 mph. Fastball shows good arm side run. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup with slight sink. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. With 5 years to further develop, Payton has potential with time and room to improve his game.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
