Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • 3B/RHPPosition Projection

10/19/2011 - Arizona Junior Fall Classic - 2011 Philip is a 2B/RHP with a strong lower half and plays the game hard. Defensively, he has an accurate arm and good pre-pitch movements that allow him to be very athletic in the infield. His defense will continue to develop as he learns play through ball and create better angles to balls in the hole. At the plate, he has a direct bat path and extends through the hitting zone, allowing him to display some gap-to-gap power. His power will become more consistent as he learns hit behind the ball. On the mound, he has good arm action, repeatable mechanics, and works the bottom of the strike zone well. His abilities on the mound will continue to grow as he learns to trust his feel for his off-speed pitches. With two more years of high school baseball remaining, Philip has the tools to continue to develop in preparation for the next level.

01/14/2011 - Under Armour Pre-Season All-America - 2011 Maldari showed similar abilities as we had previously seen at Christmas Camp and Tournament. At 3B, he displays fluid actions with hands and feet working well through fielding process. He uses his lower half well and showed a quick, clean transfer / exchange in getting rid of the baseball quickly. Feet are aggressive as he attacks the baseball. Offensively, Phillip loads well with his hands working loosely as he attacks the baseball. He shows a feel for the barrel with the baseball jumping off his bat when centered. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 79-81 mph. He attacks hitters, working to get ahead and changes speeds well in keeping hitters off balance.

12/18/2010 - Christmas Camp and Tournament 2010 - Session 1 Philip showed good skills both in the INF and on the mound at Pirate City. Defensively, Phillip has good actions and instincts and he makes plays on balls hit his way. He has good defensive knowledge, his release is clean, and he throws with accuracy and carry to his target. On the mound, Philip has a repeatable delivery and he pounds the zone with strikes. He has a compact delivery, he works in good tempo, and his actions are loose. Philip increased his radar velocity from 81 to 83 MPH during his time in FL. Offensively, Phillip makes hard contact and he can hit to all fields. He has direct hands to the ball, his base running skills are good, and he also had 2 triples in game play.

10/27/2010 - Arizona Fr/So Fall Classic - 2010 Philip is a young (2013) two-way player in the OF plus on the mound with a strong frame that shows projection as he continues to physically mature. Currently, he projects best in the OF for the next level. Foot speed is average as he will benefit by getting on a speed / agility program to improve foot quickness. He takes proper routes / angles in tracking down balls as he reads balls well off the bat but needs to work on getting behind more to play through with momentum to his target. He moves well laterally, displaying range. Throws are accurate, flashing carry but needs to get on a long toss program to aid in further developing more arm strength. Offensively, Maldari shows a solid setup with rhythm and a strong recognition of the strike zone. Hands are quick and direct to the ball, generating bat speed as he shows a plus feel for the barrel with baseball jumping off his bat when centered. He was 2 for 8 with a 2B and 3B at the event. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 78-81 mph with sinking action. Breaking ball is a quality out pitch displaying tight spin and sharp breaking action. Changeup shows average feel for with tumbling action. With 3 years to further develop, Philip has a lot of potential with the makings of a special type player as he continues to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
