10/06/2010 - Arizona Fall Invitational - 2010 Pierce is a tall, athletic, 1st baseman with a chance to be an impact player at the next level. He has sure hands, he is aggressive to the ball, and he moves well around the bag. Pierce is a good target at 1st base, and can improve with quicker feet and by fielding the ball further out in front of his body. At the plate, Pierce has a balanced approach, good feel for the barrel, and good bat speed. He has some pop in his bat and with better tracking and an improved 2 strike approach, solid offensive numbers can get better.

06/20/2010 - College PREP - Lakewood (Denver), CO Pierce showed improvements in many areas at his most recent workout in Lakewood, CO. He lowered his 60-time from 7.52 to 7.19, and his home to 1st time from 4.8 to 4.31. Pierce is a big / strong 1st baseman that plays aggressively and moves well around the bag. He trusts his glove, plays in good rhythm, and throws accurately to his target. Pierce shows good athleticism at 1B and if he can field the ball more out in front of his body and loose his arm action, defensive grades will get better. Offensively, Pierce improved both his hitting and power grades from 42 to 45 and 45 to 50 respectively. He is a strong hitter, with good bat speed, and very good barrel accuracy. Pierce throws his hands directly to the ball and uses all fields. Better rotation and use of his lower 1/2 will only help hitting continue to improve.

07/31/2009 - Pirate City World Series - Session 1 Powers continues to show steady improvements in his baseball abilities, especially at the plate. Hitting abilities have improved to slightly above average with solid average power. He shows strength in his swing with baseball jumping off his bat when centered. Swing path is compact and level. He was 2 for 11 with a 2B at the event.

06/28/2009 - College PREP - Lakewood (Denver), CO Pierce is an athletic 1B who has a tall, solid high school build. He has improved in just about every area of his game since a previous event. At 1B, Pierce has active feet and adequate footwork, he shows a solid glove, and presents a solid target. He would benefit from playing long toss to develop is arm even further, and by raising is arm slot to prevent a slinging action. At the plate, Powers shows a balanced stance, he loads his hands and throws his hips for power, and has a level bat path allowing him to square up the pitch effectively. To become a better hitter he needs to become more fluid on his load, he needs to keep his head and front side closed, and throw is top hand more for better power.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
