Official Scouting Report

  • OF/RHPPosition Projection

07/11/2014 - 2014 Under Armour Showcase: Baseball Factory's Team One South White continues to show as a OF/RHP. Currently, he projects slightly better in the OF for the next level where he has improved his baseball abilities. With that said, he has major upside on the mound at 6'6 given his arm strength and body type. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date, now a tremendous runner at 6.76 which is especially impressive given his size. At the plate, he improved his hitting abilities, now showing near pro level abilities through an athletic setup. He gets to a strong launch position and attacks the ball with hands, generating tremendous bat speed. He shows a feel for the barrel with the baseball exploding off the bat when centered with plus power potential. In the OF, feet are quick and athletic as he takes proper routes / angles in tracking down balls, covering a lot of ground. He works to get behind balls and plays through with momentum to his target. He gets rid of the baseball quickly with life, accuracy, and on line carry. On the mound, arm strength has improved as he threw his top velocity to date, topping out at 86 mph. Fastball showed a range of 83-86 mph with arm side run. He shows quality off speed pitches that will get outs at the next level. Control is outstanding as he attacks hitters and throws strikes with all his pitches. Preston is a special athlete and will make a tremendous addition to a college program where he can be used as a two way player.

04/13/2014 - National Tryout - Bartlett (Memphis), TN White only showed on the mound at the event but has improved his baseball abilities, especially at the plate where he displays superior hitting and power numbers through an athletic setup. Hands are quick, generating tremendous bat speed through a level swing path. He works to stay inside the ball and shows a feel for the barrel with baseball exploding off the bat when centered to all fields. Power potential is present as he will hit and hit with power at the next level. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date, now a well above average runner at 7.09. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 82-84 mph on a slight downhill plane. Breaking ball shows potential as being a quality pitch at the next level, displaying 11/5 shape with sharp breaking action. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a feel for but needs to develop more movement on pitch. Control is a plus as he throws strikes with all his pitches and locates to both sides of the plate.

10/16/2013 - Arizona Junior Fall Classic Preston showed well in both the OF and on the mound, and at the plate during his time in Arizona. Defensively, Preston makes plays, he reads the ball off the bat well, and his footwork is efficient. He plays through the ball and throws with accuracy and carry from a long / free arm action. At the plate, Preston has an athletic set-up, a square stride, and his swing is level. He has good bat speed, makes solid contact, and he flashes solid pop in his bat. He gets good extension and finish to his swing. On the mound, Preston shows a solid upside, a good FB, and good frame. When he lets it loose, the ball jumps out of his hand. He topped out at 85 mph at the event, despite having his arm be a little bit tired. He has big time upside given his body type and athleticism and we like him as a possible 2 way player at the next level.

04/21/2013 - College PREP - Bartlett (Memphis), TN Preston is an extremely impressive 2015 prospect both as an outfielder and a pitcher. He has an extremely projectable 6'5", 185 lb. frame and shows excellent overall athleticism and coordination. As a hitter, he has a confident, rhythmic approach with a clean right-handed stroke. He is relaxed and quiet, tracks the ball well and has a direct, level path. The result is consistent hard contact. As an outfielder he gets good reads and takes solid routes to the ball. He moves through balls well and throws accurately. As a pitcher, Preston gets excellent downhill plane on his low 80s fastball. His delivery is balanced and repeatable leading to an ability to throw all of his pitches for strikes. He complements his fastball with a quality change up that has some tail. His curveball has tight rotation and shows promise, but will need some refinement to be a consistent swing-and-miss pitch. Overall, Preston is an outstanding prospect who warrants close following from recruiters.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
