10/19/2011 - Arizona Junior Fall Classic - 2011 Rance is a tall and lanky right-handed pitcher and spends some time in the outfield when he's not on the mound. Defensively, he has a strong arm with some good carry and makes all the routine plays in the outfield. Rance's defensive abilities should continue to improve as he learns to get into a more athletic fielding position and get behind fly balls. At the plate, he stays tall and has a level bat path, but needs to trust his hands and utilize his lower half throughout his swing. On the mound, he has decent arm action, a good tempo, and has command with all his pitches. Rance's abilities on the mound should continue to develop as he learns to find a more consistent arm slot. With two seasons of high school baseball remaining, Rance has the opportunity to continue and develop his skills in preparation for the next level.

09/18/2011 - College PREP - Oklahoma City, OK Rance is a tall, thin, RHP who will graduate in 2013. On the mound, Rance has a loose / quick arm action, a controlled balance point, and good glove tuck. He has on-time separation, level shoulders, and good direction toward home. Rance keeps a still head, he competes in the zone with all of his pitches, and he finishes in an athletic / complete position. A little smoother actions and continuing to add arm strength will help mound effectiveness rise. At the plate, Rance has a tall / square set-up, a short stride, and he is quick through the ball. He knows the zone, has late explosion, and he makes consistent contact. If Rance can keep his back elbow high, and work the ball to all fields, offensive numbers can spike.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
