01/14/2011 - Under Armour Pre-Season All-America - 2011 Dowdell showed solid offensive and defensive improvements at the Pre-Season All-America. He lowered his pop times from 2.1 to 2.05, and showed quick feet, athletic actions, and soft hands. Red has a solid body, moves well laterally and blocks and receives the ball well. He centers it on his chest, has a clean transfer and throws with carry and accuracy to his target. Offensively, Red has an athletic set-up, quick hands and good bat speed. He takes an aggressive and level swing. He puts the ball in play, and he has pop in his bat. Red is a talented catcher that college coaches will keep their eyes on.

08/09/2010 - College PREP - Trenton, NJ Red showed some improvements in his game during Team One Northeast. His defensive abilities showed to be similar and he lowered his pop times from the 2.19 - 2.31 range to 2.09 - 2.20. He has good athleticism behind the dish, he holds a low target, and he has good direction toward his target. Red gains ground well and throws accurately with carry to 2nd base. Added arm strength will only help defensive grades further improve. At the plate, Red has a good approach, quiet head, and a short / compact swing. He has a decent launch, a level swing, and he can spray the ball to all fields. Hitting can get better if Red can get better extension through the ball and transfer his weight more efficiently.

04/25/2010 - College PREP - Ashburn (DC), VA Red is a young catcher with an athletic looking body that is well suited for his position as a catcher. His feet are quick, working in line with his target as he displays a quick transfer and exchange in getting rid of the baseball. His throws are accurate with carry, as he shows a pop time range of 2.19-2.31. Receiving and blocking skills are quality tools that will play at the next level. He is a wall behind the dish. Offensively, Dowdell continues to shine displaying an aggressive approach with his hands. The baseball jumps off his bat when centered with power currently showing best to the pull side. With 2 years to further develop, Red has the makings to be a solid offensive and defensive catcher at the next level.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
