Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • RHPPosition Projection

12/01/2013 - College PREP - Los Angeles, CA In Richard's most recent Baseball Factory outing he showed consistency to his pitchability. On the bump, Ashurst shows good presence with athleticism and feel for his pitches. He throws strikes with his three pitches and he topped out at 84 MPH. His CH was his best off-speed pitch, being thrown with some cut at 71-73 MPH. In all - his 6'0/185 lbs frame has athleticism and projection to become a next level pitcher.

10/17/2012 - Arizona Junior Fall Classic Ashurst continues to show as a 3B/RHP with potential at both positions. At 3B, feet are active as he works around balls and squares up well, displaying soft / clean hands. He needs to increase foot speed to continue to improve range and defensive abilities. At the plate, Richard shows an athletic setup with rhythm. Hands are quick flashing bat speed as he makes consistent contact, mainly to the pull side. He needs to work to keep hands inside the ball to utilize all fields and improve hitting grade. At the event, he was 4 for 9 with 3B. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 75-78 mph on slight downhill plane. Slider displays tight spin and sharp / short break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, with slight fade. Command / control are a plus as he throws strikes with all his pitches, locating to both sides of the plate. Mental makeup is a plus as he is very coachable and works hard to be the best player he can be.

08/01/2012 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City - Session 1 Richard showed as a RHP/3B at the event but currently projects best on the mound for the next level. He shows a loose, clean arm action that works well to the plate. Fastball showed a range of 76-79 mph. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual break. He slows his arm speed on his changeup, tipping off pitch to hitters. Control is a plus as he throws strikes with all his pitches. At 3B, feet are aggressive; he displays soft / clean hands, and plays through balls well. At the plate, Ashurst shows a balanced setup with rhythm. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed through a level swing path. Mental makeup is a plus as he is very coachable and works hard.

06/10/2012 - College PREP - Las Vegas, NV Richard is a right-handed pitcher with a strong lower half. On the mound, he has a loose arm action with good extension and smooth separation in his delivery, as well as plenty of upside on the mound. His abilities on the mound should continue to develop as he learns to maintain consistent mechanics on all his pitches. At the plate, he has an athletic setup and good balance with a quite head throughout his swing. His tools on the mound should continue to improve as he learns to maintain his backside and keep his hands working strong through the zone. With two more seasons of high school baseball remaining, Richard has the opportunity to continue to develop his skills in preparation for the next level.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
