Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • 3B/RHPPosition Projection

07/31/2019 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City - Session 2 (Ages 14-18) Rick continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. At the plate, power potential has improved through a squared setup. Hands are quick (83 mph exit velocity) and work through an aggressive swing path. He works to keep hands inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. He has some strength in his swing with the baseball jumping off the bat when centered. At 3B, he displays smooth / athletic actions. Feet are active and attacks balls, playing through balls with his body. Glove action is firm but needs to present more out front. Range will increase as he continues to improve foot quickness. On the mound, he has a good overall delivery, a good arm action, and he rotates his hips through to his target. Arm strength has improved as he threw his top velocity to date at 73 mph. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual break. He slows his arm speed on his changeup, tipping off pitch to hitters. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. Mental makeup is a plus as he is very coachable and works hard to be the best player he can be.

04/22/2018 - National Tryout Plus - Grand Rapids, MI Rick is a physically strong and talented 2021 2-way prospect. At SS, Rick has active pre pitch movement and has a quick first step to the ball. He creates angles to the ball and has a clean exchange. At the plate, Rick starts in a tall and open stance. He gets his front foot down on time and stays balanced through contact. He has a middle approach and works to keep the barrel flat to the ball. On the bump, Rick creates sink on his fastball and has a traditional 12-6 breaking ball. Continuing to stay balanced on the back leg and separating his hands-on time will allow him to pound the strike zone more consistently. Rick will continue to improve with experience and we hope to see his progress in the future.

07/06/2016 - Cape Cod Select Training & Competition Rick is a very athletic player who worked hard on his skills during his time in the Cape. On the mound, this RHP works to a controlled balance point and has smooth separation. He pounds the zone with strikes. FB has tailing action topping out at 62 mph. Changeup is thrown with FB arm speed - helping to create deception. Driving more off of the rubber with his lower 1/2 and working more in-line toward the plate will help to increase velocity and improve command. At the plate, Rick shows an athletic setup with balance. He takes a hack on a direct path and connects with strength. Engaging more of his lower 1/2 (avoid lunging) will help to increase power. A 2021 grad - Rick has upside with still a ton of time to progress.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
