Official Scouting Report

  • LHP/1BPosition Projection

07/14/2014 - National Tryout - Carrollton (DFW), TX Rick continues to work hard on the diamond. On the bump, this LHP has 3 effective pitches coming from a deceptive delivery. He throws strike with all 3 pitches and works through quick tempo. Slider is best off-speed pitch as it has 2/8 shape and late break. He commands the zone and paints the corners. At 1B, Rick fields with soft hands. He has the ability to go get and pick balls out of the dirt. With the bat, he lets the ball travel into the zone and connects with pop. He gets extension through the zone and drives the ball. Only a 2017 grad - the future looks bright for this young star.

07/26/2013 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City Rick is a young player who has a good grasp on the game and plays smart. In the infield, he has an athletic fielding position and soft/sure hands. He has a long throwing motion with good life/carry and his throws are accurate. He can work on his footwork around the base and working from the ground up when fielding the ball. On the mound, Rick shows very good mechanics. balance, rhythm, separation, arm action and extension are all sound. He can work on lengthening his stride, which will allow him to follow through towards the plate and land in an athletic fielding position as opposed to falling off to 3B. At the plate, Rick gets his lower half involved well and consistently puts the ball in play. He has a good load/stride and his swing is on-plane through the zone. He can work on not sitting on his back side, and hit against a firm front leg. Also, letting the ball travel/get deep will allow him to drive the ball to all fields. Overall, Rick shows lots of upside, especially on the mound, and his willingness to be coached will help him tremendously.

12/27/2012 - Baseball Factory Christmas Camp & Tournament at Vero Beach Rick is a LHP/1B with lots of potential as a two-way player. In the field Rick works out of a good fielding position with active feet and is aggressive fielding the ball. He has a loose accurate arm with carry, and firm hands. Rick can improve his footwork around the bag, picking the ball, and his range (1st step quickness). On the mound Rick is a lefty throwing from a 3/4 arm angle. He is tall and controlled with good arm-side run and good front arm action. Rick could be more explosive and work on getting is backside through, this will help him be more consistently down in the strike zone. At the plate Rick shows good balance and fluid timing with a simple approach. He is could be a very consistent hitter is he works on his load, swing path (not chopping at the ball) and delivering the barrel without wrapping. Rick has a lot of potential on the mound with a projectable pitchers body, with continued work he could be a solid two-way player in the future.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
