Official Scouting Report

  • RHP/SSPosition Projection

08/17/2013 - National Tryout - Huron, SD Rick is a young, hard working player. At shortstop, Rick displays the ability to make all of the routine plays. He continues to have a loose arm action while making accurate throws to the target. Rick has to work on fielding the baseball with two hands which will help to avoid getting the in-between hop. At the plate, Rick maintains consistent contact while working on a more square and balanced setup. If Rick utilizes his lower half, he will have more pop off the barrel to all fields. On the mound, he has a high 3/4 arm angle with on-time separation and rhythm to the plate. Rick has to continue maintaining arm speed with all off-speed pitches. He shows improvement finishing athletically and out over his front side. Rick displays good mound presence for a young pitcher. He is a talented, young, two-way player that displays his love for the game and is coachable.

07/26/2013 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City Rick is a young player who is coachable and continuing to improve. In the infield, he squares the ball up nicely and keeps the ball in front with his fielding position. He makes the routine plays and also has good range. He can work on getting on top with his throws, although knowing how to throw from different angles is important to middle infielders. On the mound, he has a controlled balance point and separates on time. He also does a good job of keeping his shoulders level throughout his delivery. Rick can work on lengthening his stride and stiffening up his landing leg after he lands which will help him have a better finish. At the plate, he has a crouched set up and does a decent job with his lower half. He makes contact consistently and battles with two strikes thanks to his level bat path. He can work on his rhythm and timing which will help loosen up his body during the swing. Overall, Rick will continue to improve as he works on fundamentals and receives instruction.

02/24/2013 - Interactive Video Program - Sioux Falls, SD Rick is a talented R/R, two way player - SS/RHP - that does many things well on the field. Offensively, he is a contact type hitter that allows the ball to travel and flashes some pull side pop. At shortstop, he makes routine plays with firm hands and has a clean exchange that leads to consistent throws. On the mound, Rick throws 3 pitches for strikes with his curve-ball showing the best upside, having 11/5 shape, and dropping in velocity significantly from his fastball. He displays smooth rhythm and sound mechanics. Over the next few years we believe Rick will be best suited in the infield with an ability to hop on the mound and compete.

Offensively
1. Balance
2. Implement hand load
3. Work to find consistent rhythm
Infield
1. Arm Strength
2. Footwork
3. Glove presentation
Pitching
1. Long toss
2. Further stride
3. Maintain arm-speed with off-speed pitches

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
