Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • 1B/RHPPosition Projection

01/26/2014 - College PREP - Myrtle Beach, SC Trey continues to show a lot of improvements in his baseball abilities both at 1B and on the mound. Currently, he projects best on the mound for the next level. Arm strength has improved as he threw his top velocity to date, topping out at 85 mph. Fastball showed a range of 81-85 mph on a downhill plane and hides the ball well. Breaking ball has improved, displaying 11/5 shape with sharp / late breaking action. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing slight sink. Off speed stuff show as quality pitches that will get outs at the next level. Command / control are outstanding as he throws strikes with all his pitches, locating to both side of the plate, and changes speeds well. At 1B, he displays proper footwork around the bag and is a quality receiver, displaying clean hands. At the plate, he continues to shine through a squared / athletic setup. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed through a level swing path. He works to stay inside the ball, utilizing all fields. Power numbers will continue to improve as he learns to use his lower half.

07/31/2013 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City - Session 1 Trey is a hard working player who continues to progress in his game. This 2-way player has a bright future in the game thanks to his abilities on the mound. On the bump, FB now tops out at 80 mph and shows slight action. CB is nasty, showing 11/5 shape and late break. He stays directional and drives off the rubber with his lower 1/2. Defensively at 2B, Trey shows fluid pre-pitch footwork and moves around the ground ball well. Plus lateral movements allow him to make the backhand play look easy. At the plate, this righty stays short and quick to the zone, making consistent contact. He hits the ball where it's pitched and uses the whole field. Trey is coachable and wants to continue to improve and grow in his game. One example of his hard work in the last few months is that he has cut a second and a half (yes, 1.5 seconds) off his 60 yard dash time.

01/27/2013 - College PREP - Myrtle Beach, SC Trey is a young, tall, and lanky RHP/2B that will graduate in 2016. Currently, he projects best on the mound for the next level, though he shows ability at as an infielder too. On the mound, his delivery is sound / repeatable allowing his arm action to work well to the plate. Arm strength is above average for his age as indicated by his top velocity of 78 mph. Fastball shows a range of 75-78 mph. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with sharp break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a solid feel for with fading action. Off speed pitches show as quality pitches that will get outs at the next level. Command / control are a plus as he throws strikes with all his pitches, changing speeds well. At 2B, feet are active as he attacks ground balls with his feet, squaring up well and displaying clean hands. He needs to work to play through balls while presenting hands more out front and increase foot quickness to improve defensive grade. At the plate, Benton shows an athletic setup with balance and rhythm. Hands are loose / smooth and work through a level swing path. He makes consistent contact and shows a feel for the barrel through a solid line drive approach. For hitting grades to improve, he needs to work to keep hands inside the ball to utilize all fields. Power numbers will continue to improve as he learns to use his lower half more. With 3 years to further develop, Trey has a lot of potential and will catch the eyes of the collegiate coaches as he continues to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
