02/21/2016 - College PREP - Xenia, OH This athletic R/R OF continues to shine. In the OF, he takes a quick first step with long strides to track down fly-balls in the gaps. He works through the ball fluidly and gains ground toward his target. As a hitter - Riley shows a square setup with centered balance. Quick hands zip the barrel through a level path as he squares it up with some pop. Riley has upside and will make an impact on the diamond.

01/15/2016 - Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament Riley has progressed nicely, worked hard and molded himself into a solid OF prospect. Foot speed has improved as he now runs his 60 in 6.90. He moves lightly on the balls of his feet covering ground in the OF. He works into position behind the ball and plays through it aggressively, gaining ground toward his target. At the plate, this righty has a balanced setup with fluid rhythm to load. He barrels the ball up and hits line-drives consistently. He is a leadoff type with his knack to put the bat on the ball and get down the 1B line with speed. Riley is a solid all-around player who will make an impact in this his junior year.

08/02/2015 - National Tryout Plus - Dublin (Columbus), OH Riley continues to show well on the diamond. In the OF, he works lightly on the balls of his feet and covers ground in the gaps. He works behind, gathers well and plays through gaining ground toward his target. As a hitter - this righty has a balanced setup with quiet/simple actions. Hands are quick as he whips the barrel on a level path and squares the ball up consistently. He is quick out of the box and hustles down the 1B line. Only a 2017 grad - Riley has skills and will make an impact on the diamond.

07/06/2015 - College PREP - Cleveland, OH Riley improved his foot speed at the event, now a well above average runner at 7.13. At the plate is where he shows best, displaying well above average hitting abilities with solid power potential through an athletic setup and aggressive approach. Hands are quick, generating plus bat speed through a level / direct swing path. He works to stay inside the ball, utilizing all fields and shows a feel for the barrel with solid line drive pop. Power grades will continue to improve as he utilizes his lower half more efficiently and works to keep hands through the ball at contact. In the OF, he takes proper routes / angles in tracking down balls and works to get behind, playing through with momentum to his target. Riley reads balls well off the bat and covers a lot of ground. Throws are accurate with carry but needs to work on better footwork to throw to continue to improve arm grade.

07/30/2014 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City - Session 1 Riley continues to impress on the diamond. He has made several improvements since we last saw him. Offensively, this RHH has an athletic setup with good balance. Barrel delivery is quick to and through the zone. He puts the barrel on the ball consistently and is a tough out. In the OF, he tracks down balls hit into the gaps with speed. He has a fluid arm with a clean arm action to throw. Baumbick is a hard worker who brings his all to the field.

03/30/2014 - National Tryout - Washington (Pittsburgh), PA Riley continues to develop his skills. In the OF, he tracks down balls hit into the gaps with speed as he works behind the fly-ball. He has a clean exchange and fires accurate throws to his target. Continuing to increase his arm-strength will only aid his OF play. At the plate, this righty shows a well balanced approach with a solid base. He squares the ball up and utilizes his lower 1/2 well to create torque and drive the ball. On the bump, Riley works in-line toward the plate and fills up the zone throwing strikes. Breaking ball shows 11/5 shape with tight spin. Only a 2017 grad - Riley is a hard worker who will only continue to improve.

11/07/2013 - Baseball Factory Select Training & Competition at Pirate City Riley showed only in the OF at the event. Feet are quick / active as he takes proper routes / angles in tracking down balls. He is aggressive and reads balls well off the bat, flashing range in the OF. For defensive grade to continue to improve, he needs to work to get behind balls more and play through with momentum to his target. Throws are accurate, flashing carry but will benefit by building more arm strength through a long toss program and work to get rid of the baseball quicker. At the plate, Baumbick shows a squared, athletic stance with balance. Hands are loose and work through a level swing path. He makes consistent contact through a solid line drive approach. For hitting grades to continue to improve, he needs to get stride foot down sooner to work on time. Power numbers will continue to improve as he learns to use his lower half more. At the event, he was 2 for 3 with a 4 BB as he displays a patient approach and a solid eye at the plate. Mental makeup is a plus as he has a positive attitude, works hard, and is very coachable.

07/08/2013 - College PREP - Cleveland, OH Riley is a thin, 2-way player who plays OF and RHP. Defensively, Riley has active footwork, good range, and he makes plays consistently. He has a quick exchange, and delivers the ball with accuracy from a long arm action to his target. Riley can improve defensively if he can work behind quicker, play more through, and add arm strength. On the mound, Riley has a free / loose arm action, on-time separation, and his shoulders are level. He has good direction toward home and finishes in a complete position. Added arm strength and sharper off-speed can help mound effectiveness improve. At the plate, Riley has a square set-up, good balance, and he stays on top of the ball. He swings in good rhythm, and will need to let the ball travel, get more extension through the ball, and use more lower 1/2 for hitting to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
