Official Scouting Report

  • RHP/OFPosition Projection

01/18/2013 - Arizona National Spring Training Riley is a young two-way player who has a pitchers frame with a lot of potential. On the mound Riley delivers from a 3/4 arm slot which allows for a heavy ball with movement. He works down the mound in line with level shoulders. If Riley smooths out some of his actions and completes his finish he could be very good on the bump. In the outfield Riley has a loose arm with short action, and from his 3/4 arm slot is very accurate. He squares up to the ball well and uses his lower half to both field and throw. Riley could improve by getting his glove out sooner and being lower to the ball. As with all young players Riley would benefit from speed/strength training and a long toss program to get faster and stronger. At the plate Riley shows great hand-eye coordination with solid contact. He starts from an open stance with a short, square stride. His hands work well thru the zone, but he does have a lot of movement in his swing. By continuing to work on using his lower half more in his swing and simplifying some of his movements Riley could be a dangerous hitter. As a 2016 graduate, Riley has time to work on his strength, speed and refining his mechanics. If he does he could be one to watch in the future.

07/27/2012 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City Riley Crane is a tall 2016 graduate who pitches and plays the outfield. In the outfield Riley has active footwork, plays thru the ball well, and stays online. He shows playable range and works well with the ball over his head. At the plate Riley had a great camp leading his team with hits during the games and had quality at bats. He sets up tall with an open stance and takes a short stride. He has potential power if he continues to get better with his lower half. On the mound Riley throws a heavy fastball with good natural sink. He is athletic on the mound and shows a lot of upside with his pitchers body. Needs to work on a consistent delivery to stay strong with his finish.

06/27/2012 - Interactive Video Program - Bellevue (Seattle), WA Riley is an athletic RHP with a thin frame. On the mound, Riley has a free arm action, level shoulders, and good direction toward home. He lands in a square position and mixes his pitches well. Offensively, Riley has a tall set-up, good balance, and average bat speed. He can work the ball gap-to-gap and he uses some lower 1/2. Overall abilities can improve with work on the following.

Pitching
1. Glove side lead
2. Leg drive
3. Long toss
Offense
1. Rhythm / Timing
2. More lower 1/2

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
