10/19/2008 - College PREP - Sauget (St. Louis), IL Riley is a catcher with a solid body that does show projection as it continues to physically mature. He has improved a ton since the last time that we saw him. Arm strength is near above average displaying life, carry, and accuracy on his throws. His pop times are consistent due to his footwork and body control through the throwing process. He will control the running game with his feet and arm as indicated by his low pop times at 1.97 and a means of 2.03. Receiving skills are near above average through a solid stance and set up that allows him to work the mitt around the baseball, presenting a good view to the umpire. Blocking skills are superior as he keeps all balls out in front. He gains ground and is quick in getting his body down and around balls in the dirt with a quick, athletic recovery. At the plate, Howden has improved his power numbers and is a solid average hitter. He takes a no stride approach but generates bat speed through his quick hands. He displays a solid feel for the barrel and keeps the barrel through the baseball at contact. He has strength in his swing as the baseball jumps off his bat. Riley will draw a lot of interest from the college coaches and will be a solid player at the collegiate level.
