Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • RHP/3BPosition Projection

06/20/2009 - Omaha Pro Select Training and Tournament - Week 2 Robert continues to show as a two-way player on the mound and at 3B but projects better the mound where he has really improved his abilities. Arm strength has improved now showing near above average as indicated by his top velocity of 84 mph with a comfort zone of 81 mph. Fastball shows tailing action on a strong downhill plane creating tough angles on hitters. Breaking ball has improved displaying an 11/5 shape, tight spin with late sharp action. Arm action is loose and effortless through a fluid delivery. He attacks hitters and throws strikes with all his pitches, missing a lot of bats. Defensive abilities have improved, but Colton needs to concentrate his work ethic on the mound where his future lies. Now a class 5 pitcher, Robert has potential and will catch the eyes of the collegiate coaches as he continues to improve.

03/29/2009 - College PREP - Pittsburgh, PA Robert is a two-way player on the mound and at 3B with a solid, large frame that shows projection as it he continues to physically mature. Foot speed is solid average as indicated by his 5.15 40 time. Feet are active and aggressive in coming to get and playing through ground balls. Glove action is late and needs to be presented more down and out in front of his body. Release is slow and long due to exchange and winding up to throw. Defensive abilities are average in the infield. Arm strength is slightly above average and needs to get on a strict long toss program to aid in further developing more arm strength and raise velocities. At the plate, hitting abilities are slightly above average with average power. Swing path is level and flashes bat speed. He works to keep hands inside the baseball, utilizing all fields with a solid feel for the barrel. Power numbers will increase as he learns to load and transfer weight from backside into a firm front side. On the mound, delivery is smooth with tempo, allowing his arm action to work well. Fastball shows late action as he stays on top well. Changeup is best off speed pitch showing solid average as he maintains arm speed. Breaking ball is slightly above average displaying a 10/4 shape with lazy spin and early break. Robert has abilities with a lot of room to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
