08/02/2020 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City - Session 2 (Ages 14-18) Robert continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. He did show at SS for the first time at the event. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date. At SS, defensive abilities are solid as he displays clean / smooth actions. Feet are active as he displays proper footwork as he works to square ground balls and plays through with his body. Glove action is clean but needs to present earlier and more out front. Range will increase as he continues to improve foot quickness. At the plate, he continues to shine through a squared setup. Hands are quick and work through a level swing path. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. On the mound, arm strength has improved as he threw his top velocity to date at 76 mph. Fastball shows sinking action. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with tight spin and late break. Control is outstanding as he attacks hitters and throws strikes with all his pitches. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. Mental makeup is a plus as he has a positive attitude, works hard, and is very coachable.

03/01/2020 - College PREP - Wilson, NC Robert is an athletic (5'11"/140) 2-way player as an OF/RHP. Defensively in the OF, he takes a quick first step and is aggressive to track down fly-balls hit to his right and left. He secures the ball, gathers well and works through it well toward his target, firing strong/accurate throws. As a hitter, this righty stands in well with a square/athletic setup and centered balance. He swings against a firm front side, engaging his lower 1/2 well. Swing is direct to and through the zone as he connects with some pop (exit velocity = 83 mph). On the mound, Hales has a 3-pitch mix (FB, SL, CH) coming from an over the top arm slot. He keeps his eyes on the target, maintains fluid tempo and repeats his delivery well. FB ranges from 70-73 mph as he works it to both sides of the plate, Slider has 11/5 shape while changeup is thrown with FB arm speed to aid in deception. Working to separate his hands a little earlier while finishing out over his front side with extension will aid in his development on the mound. This 2022 grad has a solid all-around skill set with still some time to progress.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
