Official Scouting Report

  • Position Projection

10/12/2011 - Arizona Senior Fall Classic - 2011 Ryan continued to show quality athleticism as a two-way performer. What stood out most at this event was Ryan's competitiveness. Against top competition from around the country, he showed outstanding leadership qualities and played hard throughout. Behind the plate, he handled pitchers well and displayed a hard-nosed approach at a position which demands just that. At the plate, he showed the ability use the whole field, move runners and get timely hits. On the mound, he attacked hitters with a low 80s fastball that he threw for strikes. Overall, Ryan is the type of catcher that coaches want leading their team. He will make a nice addition to a college program.

07/10/2011 - College PREP - San Jose, CA Ryan is an average sized, solid and athletic two way player that will graduate in 2012. Behind the plate he shows a low target, sticks the ball well and is quick to block. When throwing he is in line to his target, has a good transfer, uses his legs well and gains ground to his target. He makes accurate throws and has good carry to second. He needs to work on more flexibility, having a wider base and getting better sway when receiving. At the plate he shows a solid load, keeps his hands inside the ball well and he has a still head tracking the ball well with his eyes. He needs to work on keeping his stride leg from collapsing and squaring up the inside pitch better. On the mound he shows good rhythm and timing, is balanced at the top of his delivery and throws on a downhill plane. He needs to try and get better arm extension to help finish better and keep from locking out on the front knee to early. Overall Ryan has tools and with a few adjustments will be a solid player at the next level.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
