Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • LHP/1BPosition Projection

03/19/2017 - College PREP - Monterey Park (Los Angeles), CA Ryan is a lean, athletic built LHP/1B prospect who has good talent on both sides of the ball. On the mound, Ryan does a nice job repeating his delivery throwing with a clean arm action from a 3/4 slot. He has good timing and lands closed to home plate. Ryan finishes with his chest over his front knee. He locates his fastball with good sink movement. He is developing his changeup and the movement mimics his fastball. As a switch-hitter, Ryan has a tall setup with a centered balance and firm front side. He has smooth rhythm with his load and maintains direction with his stride. Ryan has fast bat speed and engages his core with good rotation in his swing. Ryan shows consistent contact with a line drive approach. He is a contact hitter who shows most solid results to the pull side. In the field, Ryan plays with fluid footwork taking the correct angles to cover good ground. He presents his glove and has a clean exchange leading into a loose arm action throwing from a high 3/4 arm slot. Ryan plays with momentum through his release showing strong, accurate throws across the diamond. Overall, Ryan is a projectable prospect who has good potential offensively and defensively.

09/11/2016 - National Tryout Plus - La Verne (Los Angeles), CA Ryan continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. On the mound, arm strength has improved as he threw his top velocity to date at 71 mph. He shows a quick tempo and works through a repeatable delivery. Fastball shows good arm side run. Breaking ball displays 2/8 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup with sinking action. Building more arm strength through a long toss program will aid in developing stock on the mound. At 1B, defensive abilities have improved, displaying smooth / action. He is a good receiver, showing proper footwork around the bag. Glove is soft / clean as he presents well out front. Range will improve as he continues to increase foot quickness. At the plate, he continues to show as a switch hitter and has improved his hitting / power potential from both sides. Hands are loose and work through a level swing path. He works to stay inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. Power potential is slightly better from the left side.

12/12/2015 - Interactive Video Program - Westlake Village, CA Ryan is an athletic 2-way player as a 1B/LHP. With the bat, this switch hitter shows similarly from both sides of the dish. He has a balanced setup, a solid base, and rhythm in his hands. He barrels the ball up, hits it where it's pitched and sprays it to all parts of the field. At 1B - Ryan shows active/efficient footwork and hustles into a square fielding position. He fields the GB out in front, gathers well and works through the ball. On the mound, this LHP throws a FB & CH from a high 3/4 arm slot and free/clean arm action. He has smooth separation, works in-line toward the plate and repeats his delivery well. FB ranges from 64-66 mph while showing slight run & tail. Changeup has slight tail and compliments his FB well. Overall abilities in his game will improve with work on the following.

Offense
1. Contact points
2. Loosen/relax grip
3. Finish with extension
Defense
1. Lateral quickness
2. Footwork/Agility
Pitching
1. Arm strength (long toss)
2. Lower 1/2 drive
3. More consistent release point

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
