01/16/2015 - Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament Hughes continues to show steady play in his baseball abilities, both offensively and defensively. In the OF, he takes proper routes / angles in tracking down balls as he works to get behind balls and plays through with momentum to his target. Throws are accurate with carry as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. At the plate, hands are quick and work through the baseball, creating extension. He works to stay inside the ball, utilizing all fields with power numbers improving as he works to use his lower half more aggressively.

10/08/2014 - Arizona Senior Fall Classic Ryan has proved to be a consistent player on both ends of the ball. In his most recent outing with Baseball Factory he showed sound mechanics defensively and was aggressive to field balls on the ground. He has a sure glove and is accurate to hit his cut. More foot speed and agility reps will allow for him to recover if he takes a poor first step. Offensively, he has good balance and gets to a good hitting position with activated hands. He trusts his swing and does not over swing. He has good actions and gets extended through contact. Pitch selection is his one area where he could improve, offering at better pitches earlier in the count. In all - Ryan is a good player that offers promise for the next level.

08/02/2014 - College PREP - Salt Lake City, UT Hughes continues to shine. In the OF, he tracks down balls with speed (6.89). He hustles into position, gathers well, and works in-line toward his target. With the bat, Ryan stays through the ball and drives it on a line. He hits the ball where it's pitched and uses the whole field. Ryan will make an impact in this his Senior year.

01/17/2014 - Under Armour Pre-Season All-America Tournament Hughes continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. At the plate is where he has improved the most, now showing outstanding hitting abilities through a squared / athletic setup. Hands are quick, generating plus bat speed to and through a level swing path, creating extension. Barrel accurate is a plus with baseball jumping off the bat when centered, mainly to the pull side. Power numbers will continue to improve as he learns to use his lower half more. At the event, he was 3 for 6.

10/16/2013 - Arizona Junior Fall Classic Hughes continues to show as OF/RHP at the event but currently projects best in the OF at the next level where he has improved his baseball abilities but has an upside on the mound. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date, now a well above average runner at 7.14. He utilizes his quick / athletic feet well in tracking down balls as he reads balls well off the bat and cover a lot of ground, displaying range. Hands are feet / work well together showing smooth / clean actions and show a feel for his position, backing up baseball well. Throws are accurate with life and carry through his target as he gets rid of the baseball quickly and shows outstanding arm strength. At the plate, Ryan shows a crouched / open setup with rhythm. Hands are quick and works through a level swing path. He works to stay inside the ball, utilizing all fields. He shows a feel for the barrel through a solid line drive approach. On the mound, arm strength has improved as he topped out at 80 mph. Fastball shows a range of 75-80 mph with cutting action. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a feel for with arm side run. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as more arm strength is gained through a long toss program. Mental makeup is a plus as he has a great attitude and works hard to be the best player he can be.

07/29/2013 - Under Armour Southwest Championships, powered by Baseball Factory's Team One Hughes showed in the OF and on the mound for the first time at the event. Currently, he projects best in the OF for the next level. Defensive grade has improved now showing outstanding defensive skills. Feet are active / aggressive as he proper routes / angles in tracking down balls and works to get behind, playing through well with momentum to his target. He reads balls well off the bat and gets great jumps. At the plate, hitting grade and power numbers have improved to above average through an athletic setup with rhythm. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed through a level swing path, creating extension. He works to stay inside the ball, utilizing all fields. Barrel accuracy is a plus with baseball jumping off the bat when centered. Power numbers will continue to improve as he learns to use his lower half more. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 72-77 mph. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual break. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as more arm strength is gained through a long toss program. Mental makeup is a plus as he is a hard worker and is very coachable.

05/25/2013 - College PREP - Salt Lake City, UT Ryan is a athletic OF who excels defensively. He takes a quick first step and gets behind the fly-ball well. He gathers himself and maintains good body control, playing through the ball toward his target. He has a clean exchange and gets rid of the ball and makes strong throws toward his target. Offensively, Hughes shows an athletic setup and solid load. He is patient and lets the ball travel into the zone, with the ability to use the whole field. More backside lower 1/2 drive will result in increased power. Ryan has a solid skill set and as only a 2015 grad, still has time to develop his game.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
