03/15/2015 - National Tryout - Monterey Park (Los Angeles), CA This athletic backstop continues to impress. Behind the dish, actions are quick as he moves well laterally, centering/deadening balls off of his chest. Exchange it quick/clean as he fires throws on a line to the bag (pop times of 1.91). With the bat, he has loose/relaxed actions with fluid rhythm to load. Swing is smooth as he whips the barrel to and through the zone. He likes the pitch on the inner 1/2 and has pop to his pull-side. Ryan has the tools that will play at a very high level.

07/18/2014 - 2014 Under Armour Showcase: Baseball Factory's Team One West Ryan is an athletic 5'10/165 lbs catcher that has exceptional hit ability. Offensively, the left hits with a good base, quick bat, and gap-to-gap approach. He generates excellent bat speed and is very accurate with the barrel to and through the zone. Defensively, he sits well, moves laterally efficiently and is controlled with his body. He is sure with the glove to receive and is quick to transfer, flashing pops in the 2.0-2.1 range. All in all - Ryan is a good backstop that has another two seasons to add strength to be a plus left handed hitting, catcher prospect.

03/16/2014 - National Tryout - Carson, CA Ryan continues to shine on the diamond. This left-handed swinging backstop has an all-around plus skill-set with a strong arm. Behind the dish, he presents a low target and receives with a soft mitt. He shows good flexion and quick footwork, getting around pitches in the dirt and centering them off of his chest. He has a strong arm and quick exchange, lowering his pop time since we last saw him (now at 1.97). With the stick, Ryan shows smooth actions with good rhythm. He drives the barrel to and through the zone showing some pull-side pop. Mendoza has skills and will make an impact on the diamond.

09/08/2013 - College PREP - Azusa, CA Ryan is a very talented 2-way player as a C/3B. This left-handed hitter can swing the stick. He has a simple approach and plus bat-speed, delivering the barrel with authority. Ryan drives off of his lower 1/2 well and generates power to the gaps. Behind the plate, he sits in well in a low/athletic position. He shows good flexion and receives with a soft mitt. He has a clean exchange and gets the ball down to 2B in as low as 2.06. Blocking; he is quick to get around the ball in the dirt and centers it off of his chest. At 3B, he is sure handed and gets into a square fielding position. He makes the plays and makes accurate throws across the diamond. Mendoza has a plus all-around skill-set and has a very bright future in the game.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
