Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • OF/RHPPosition Projection

06/08/2011 - Under Armour Southeast Regional Tournament - 2011 Thompson showed similar abilities both in the OF and on the mound as he has done in previous workouts. Defensively, Ryan tracks the ball well, he takes proper angles, and he makes plays consistently. He fields ground balls cleanly, he has a quick / clean exchange, and he throws with a good arm stroke with carry to his target. On the mound, Ryan has a good body, he holds runners on base well, and he competes in the zone. His off-speed show to be effective and he pitches to contact. Offensively, Ryan is a strong hitter with a good set-up and a solid approach. He makes solid contact, he puts the ball in play, and he knows the zone.

05/29/2011 - College PREP - Tampa, FL Ryan is a big, solid and athletic looking outfielder that will graduate in 2012. He improved in most areas from his previous camp back in December of 2010. His arm strength increased five mph up to 88 mph, his arm from the outfield jumped from a grade of 48 to 55 and his defensive score went up from 50 to 52. Hitting wise he shows 90 mph bat speed, an increase from 45 to 48 in his evaluation and a jump in power grade from 48-52. A few areas to continue to work on are keeping his throwing elbow high to help with accuracy to his target and staying square with his stride while hitting to keep from diving into the pitch. Ryan's potential keeps going up with good size and speed to go along with it. He is a definite follow guy this summer that can play at the next level and make an impact.

12/27/2010 - Christmas Camp and Tournament 2010 - Session 2 Ryan is a young, athletic, 2-way player, with nice skills both in the OF and on the mound. Defensively, Ryan has a quick 1st step, he reads the ball off the bat well, and he makes plays. He has a good drop step, he covers a lot of ground, and his exchange is clean. Ryan has an excellent arm action, and delivers the ball with accuracy to his target. Added reps and more confidence will only help OF skills get even better. On the mound, Ryan showed a good idea, proper direction, and a good finish. He mixes his pitches well, competes in the zone, and he battled well. Abilities on the mound can further improve if Ryan can loosen his front leg, lengthen his arm action, and improve his command. At the plate, Ryan has an excellent approach, his hands work well, and he puts the ball in play. He has good power to all fields and went 3 for 6 in live at bats. Hitting can improve if Ryan can let the ball travel deeper into the hitting zone.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
