01/18/2019 - Baseball Factory Spring Training in Arizona (Ages 14-18) Sam continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities and has a promising future on the diamond. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date. Behind the plate, pop times have improved as he threw his lowest time to date at 2.13 with accuracy on his throws. Hands / feet work well together as he gets rid of the baseball quickly with zip on his throws. Times will continue to drop as he builds more arm strength through a long toss. He shows a solid setup and presents a low target. He utilizes his body well through the blocking process, centering balls out front. At the plate, hitting abilities have improved through an open setup. He has fluid rhythm while getting good hand separation. Hands are quick (80 mph exit velocity) and work through a level swing path. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields and shows a feel for the barrel through a line drive approach. Power will continue to increase as he utilizes his lower half more efficiently. At the event, he was 2 for 4. Mental makeup is a plus as he is very coachable and works hard to be the best player he can be.

05/27/2018 - Interactive Video Program - Salem, OR Sam is a young catcher with a tall/lean frame. Defensively, Sam has smooth actions, efficient footwork, and he moves well laterally. He has firm hands, fields in a square position, and delivery the ball from a loose arm action to 2nd base. Offensively, Sam has an athletic set-up, good balance, and plus bat speed. He has a direct barrel to the ball, makes hard contact, and uses his lower body. Sam can improve skills with work on the following.

1. Lower set-up
2. Arm strength
3. Fielding position
Offense

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "present" abilities (tools), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year, using the scale below. However, grades 10-18 are not available for use with High School players (ages 14-18), while grades 55-70 are not available for use with Pre High School players (ages 12-14). These instances are marked as "--- N/A ---" in the "Description" fields below.
